Nice! I too rate the niche lifestyle - I live on a narrowboat with my girlfriend in London, where you have to move to a different spot generally every two weeks. It's definitely cheaper than renting (£400/month covers all fuel, repairs, upkeep etc) especially if you're prepared to do all your own stunts. We had about a dozen friends doing the same but most of them didn't keep it up more than a few years. Certainly not for everyone but we both love it!

I'd love to build a tiny house in the future, pretty similar to your situation but park homes aren't built great in the UK (I work in sustainable housing at the mo so insulation is non-negotiable!) and I suspect it's much harder to get hold of a plot of land here.

Dead on! It's been great to see more of the low traffic neighbourhoods pop up and there's loads more separated cycle lanes than there used to be, but would love to see more especially on the main roads. We definitely need more behavioural change too, I'm the slowest chillest cyclist you've ever seen but still get cut up all the time.

I'm not a massive city person anyway and rents are absurd so I'd have never moved back here had I not bought the narrowboat. But what I didn't understand is how much walking, cycling, taking the bus or floating extremely slowly would change my perception of the city. I used to take the tube everywhere so never understood how everything connected together - you just pop up out the ground and you're in a brand new bubble. Taking it slow in a city not known for taking it slow means I've grown to actively enjoy living here!

Yeah this did me in! Luckily caught it before I needed to restore anything.

I moved over to Duplicacy which is great for deduplication and thinning out older backup revisions without losing any incremental changes. It can also do volume shadow copies on Windows so can backup open files. There's a minor cost for the GUI version which I'm more than happy paying to support the project. The CLI version is free, though I prefer restic for doing server backups.

Also another vote for B2 for the storage backend!

Yeah I totally agree on the usability. I need to build a current shunt to measure an alternator and was prepared for a bunch of work but...I can just buy a breakout board for an off-the-shelf chip and stick it on the i2c bus. Then all I need to do is write a python driver that converts it to dbus messages. Except someone's already done that too. Job done!

There's plenty of Pi alternative SBCs but software support isn't nearly as good so you could come across all sorts of weird edge cases. I also didn't have the option of anything higher wattage as I'm off-grid and reliant on solar. I love your e-ink idea though! Tempted to put a remote screen in with some simple stats and controls on.

So one of the devices wouldn't ever know the UPS had kicked on and that it should shut down.

You could always run NUT on the NAS to interact with the UPS over USB, and trigger the desktop and router over the network to shut down in a sensible order. Takes a bit of setting up but supports most common units and has served me well in the past.

I was in Greenland a couple of months ago for work. For such an isolated place I was surprised to find a Chinese restaurant run by a Vietnamese couple and serving a very good pork rib sandwich! It turns out there's a fair migrant population from various southeast Asian countries that come over during the fishing season to work on trawlers.

I also tried matak, which in this case came from narwhal. The fat was fantastic, the skin much less so (very chewy and with little flavour to it), but definitely an experience. A fascinating place to visit overall.
