I don't think I am that good at detecting AI text (or at least I'm not according to the the wikipedia article on it), I will see if the author writes a rebuttal (maybe they already have, but I don't have time to search for it atm).

Chiasmic Link ParentYeah I saw someone I trust and respect just entirely use AI to answer application questions for a recommendation/reference letter without any tailoring to the individual they were writing about....Yeah I saw someone I trust and respect just entirely use AI to answer application questions for a recommendation/reference letter without any tailoring to the individual they were writing about. It felt a bit fraudulent (what they were writing was not true as the individual was not very good) and I lost a lot of respect for both them and the validity of any reference letter I get. Sad times. I feel that soft fraud or lying/exaggerating too far has become normalised and really has weakened a lot of good things about modern institutions.

If you can’t understand it, then you can’t check it, and...I enjoyed this read and I think it sums up my thoughts about AI: if you don’t do the grunt work you can’t understand what you are doing. If you can’t understand it, then you can’t check it, and you lose half the reason of doing it in the first place (that deep understanding).
I tend to avoid LLMs in the same way I avoid using th car for trips I can walk- I don’t want those muscles to atrophy, and learning to struggle sometimes makes you strong and competent. -

Chiasmic Link ParentI agree with your point of view. I can appreciate the beauty in generated art in the same way I can appreciate mathematical patterns or Mandelbrot fractals. But art for me is that connection to a...I agree with your point of view. I can appreciate the beauty in generated art in the same way I can appreciate mathematical patterns or Mandelbrot fractals. But art for me is that connection to a human, in the same way it matters to me to tell a human a problem and hear that real empathy. A LLM can write empathetic words and simulate empathy, but it isn’t real as there is no one feeling it in the other side. It is a shared connection of internal feeling that is the interesting bit that matters in human (or animal) communication.

I can understand the need to find the bugs that AI models can find quickly and patch them quickly to prevent exploitation by others. -

Chiasmic Link ParentMy soil definitely became depleted after a few years. Compost has helped my rose a lot, and I try do a bit of crop rotation through the years with peas/legumes. Chiasmic LinkYeah, I forgot about this because life was hard and busy. I also forgot about my garden apart from a manic watering every other day. Surprisingly survived well, and did well enough for my toddler...Yeah, I forgot about this because life was hard and busy. I also forgot about my garden apart from a manic watering every other day. Surprisingly survived well, and did well enough for my toddler to be able to enjoy raspberries and peas from things. The tomato plants are doing well too, as are the sunflowers. Carrots did not do well, very stunted, and the beets seem to have some sort of disease as they are not flourishing at all. We had a hot dry spell in the UK and it was interesting how much worse the plants in boxes did than those in the actual ground (it makes sense, but it was such a stark difference!).

While I agree with you generally, I think it is is worth pointing out that the ram in framework laptops can be upgraded - unlike Apple MacBooks. So in my head it’s more acceptable.
