There's no such thing as an "entirely positive change" - ALL technological advances have drawbacks. The automobile revolutionized travel... but led to the loss of walkable communities. The camera allowed us to preserve our most cherished memories... but also led to revenge porn. Electricity brought light and warmth to our homes... but the power plants generating that electricity are destroying our planet. Conversely, cell phones may be addictive... but they allow us to communicate with our loved ones in an instant.

I love Black Mirror, but it's simplistic "PHONE BAD?" messaging has really fucked with the entire 20-40's demographic's opinion on tech.

To quote a great modern thinker.... "We're so buried in our phones. Instead of giving someone a real smile, we send an emoji... I mean, we don't even look at porn on our computer anymore - we look at it on our phone??? Hah. PornHub, Xtube... I know these names better than I know my own grandmother's. YouPorn, XXN, RedTube, Panty Jobs, Home-grown Simpsons stuff..."

'Wicked' is one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time - up with Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. It's popular enough they only felt the need to include motifs and cues from the show in this trailer.

I know the "Studios don't want to advertise their movies as musicals" thing has become popular online but it's not really applicable in this case because Wicked is so popular.

    I tried Vision Pro today!

I was disappointed in some things, blown away by others, and ultimately left thinking "I am definitely buying whatever version of this exists 3 years from now". IMO this technology is undoubtedly the next step in personal computing - it's just a matter of time until the headsets are smaller and cheaper.

It also convinced me that I need to have someone recording Spatial Video at my wedding this summer....... the internet clowned on that guy in the AVP trailer recording video of his kids, but man does it look fantastic in the headset. Like a window into a memory.

    2. Starfield

    3. Red Dead Redemption 2

Halo Infinite has made a serious comeback this year. I enjoyed it well enough at launch but they've really pulled off another MCC-style revamp. Gunplay is the best in the series, there are a ton of free-to-earn cosmetics now, lots of map variety, (mostly) fixed desync, and a steady stream of new content. This makes me so happy because while there are plenty of games like Call of Duty and plenty of games like Fortnite, there's simply nothing quite like Halo.

Starfield was really solid IMO. Bethesda got a lot of (deserved) criticism for some choices in this game, but damn it.... it's such an engaging world to get lost in (literally, thanks to the map issue haha). I also really enjoyed the creative twist at the end. Can't wait to hop back in when Shattered Space drops.

I hated Red Dead Redemption II at launch. I thought it was slow, meandering, didn't respect the player's time, and had incredibly repetitive mission structure. I enjoyed the slower pace of the story but the gameplay was so tedious - like Rockstar prioritized being an accurate simulation over being a fun game. Weapon maintenance is NEVER fun lol. I bought it again when it came to PC and still hated it. I decided to actually sit down and finish it this year and.... I still didn't really like it. I enjoyed the story and the visuals were beautiful, but it just didn't connect with me. Oh well. At least now I can say I finished it.

Does Immortals work well on Deck? I had some issues with it recognizing controller input on PC, and in conjunction with Ubisoft Launcher I assumed it was a no-go for Deck.

Spirited, the Apple+ movie that released last year, is IMO a genuinely great Christmas movie and an instant classic.

Let me rip this band-aid off: Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell play the same characters they always play. It's Deadpool and Buddy the Elf. To me it's the biggest problem with the movie, but if you enjoy those characters then you'll likely enjoy them here.

    But on the other hand...

The music? Catchy! I particularly like this early number about exploiting culture wars to sell real Christmas trees.

The story? Surprisingly creative. I don't want to say too much, but this movie does something REALLY interesting with the Christmas Carol story here I had never seen done before. Worth watching for this alone IMO.

The comedy? Genuinely good. Ryan Reynolds cyberbullies an 8th grader.

I will admit, I am biased because my buddy worked on this and gave me a tour of the "Victorian England" set (actually downtown Boston IRL). But it's a fun time, highly recommend.

Been binging Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I've always considered myself a pretty big Trek fan but had only seen TOS, TNG, and the Kelvin movies. "Why would I watch a show about some space station when I could just keep watching USS Enterprise content?" I naively thought.

I just started Season 4 and wow, how wrong I was. Incredible writing far more nuanced than even the best of TNG. Characters that grow and change and fail. A little heavyhanded with the CARDASSIANS = NAZIS parallel but hey if that means we get episodes like "Duet", I'll take it. Crazy how this show was so accepting of trans and queer folk back in 1993 - it's actually a little depressing to see how far we've regressed. Terminally-online idiots would certainly call this show "woke propaganda" today. But IMO this is some of the best sci-fi television I've ever watched. I just watched S4E2 "The Visitor" and cried multiple times.

My fiance has always been pretty anti-sci-fi (she's more of a cottagecore girly) but after watching me watch a few episodes she's gotten hooked as well. Been telling her for years she'd love Star Trek if she gave it a chance, so it feels pretty vindicating :)

On Friday my fiance and I celebrated our 5th (dating) anniversary! Took her to a little Italian place in the city, she loved it. We said we wouldn't go big on gifts this year, but I figured we're engaged for such a short part of our lives I wanted to get her something nice she could remember this time with. I found a necklace that matches her engagement ring - I think she really liked it!

Today I started Baldur's Gate 3. I love how I can run it on my PC and stream it to the Steam Deck plugged into the living room TV. We're really living in the future.

Tomorrow I'm doing laundry and studying for a big job interview on Monday. Could potentially double my salary and be half the commute. Fingers crossed!

    • Exemplary

What tips do you have for a first time Deck owner?

    • Less demanding games = more battery life (duh). Stuff like Stardew Valley, Ace Attorney, etc can get you 8-10 hours of playtime.

    • Generally speaking, the Deck can run PS5/Series X games at lowest settings; PS4/XBO games at medium with some compromises; and anything 360/PS3 or older at max settings.

    • For more demanding titles, try manually adjusting the screen refresh rate down to 40hz. It's smoother than 30fps but less intensive than 60fps.

    • Steam's Verified system has some issues. ProtonDB is a far more reliable way to see how well you can expect a game to run on Deck.

    • The Deck is a VERY powerful emulation handheld. I have mine loaded up with games from NES to GBA to PS2. You can fit thousands of retro games in even the 64GB Deck.

    • Don't feel like you have to go crazy customizing your Deck or sideloading OSes or anything. It's perfectly usable out-of-the-box as a vanilla device.

    • If you do open your Deck at some point (to add an SSD or replace the thumbsticks) make sure to remove the MicroSD card or else it will be damaged.

    • Don't forget about Desktop Mode! I have an official Steam Deck Dock plugged into my TV and use Desktop Mode to stream Hulu without ads (I have a Chrome adblocker installed).

    • If you're looking to affordably grow your Steam library, be sure to check out Humble Choice. It's a $12/mo subscription run by IGN that gives you a bunch of Steam games (to keep forever) each month. I have 500+ games in my library and 75% of them came from this site. Sometimes there's a "bad" month but there are usually at least 1-2 good games that make it well worth the $12.

Any essential games I should be sure to get?

    • Aperture Desk Job (this is the "pack-in" game, designed by Valve to show off what the Deck can do)

    • Portal/Portal 2

    • Stardew Valley

    • Hades

    • Cuphead

    • Spider-Man: Remastered/Miles Morales

    • Vampire Survivors

    • Monster Hunter: Rise

    • Check out the Great on Deck category on Steam. These are all games with a Verified status.
In terms of Epic Games Store or Xbox Game Pass... it's not officially possible but there are ways to get them working. I'm not familiar with either process so I can't provide any more guidance than that.
