I recently picked up Enshrouded. It's been a ton of fun! While it doesn't really bring anything new to the table, it combines dozens of individual features from other games I love into one package. It also (smartly) drops some annoying features of the survival genre, like hunger meters and procedural maps.

Off the top of my head, Enshrouded has

    • BOTW's exploration (complete with a glider)

    • FromSoft's combat mechanics (not difficulty)

    • Minecraft's voxel-based building

    • Valheim's prefab-style building

    • Assassin's Creed Odyssey's loot system

All these individual things synthesize into what I would consider damn close to my "perfect" video game. I've spent a dozen hours building my base, only to decide I want a basement and then physically dug into the terrain to build it. There's tons of loot, weapons, and gear to find (not just wood > iron > steel > gold > etc. you see in other survival games). The developers are extremely hardworking, with a 2025 roadmap already published that's overflowing with content (1.0 release is planned for early 2026). It is an extremely rare example of an Early Access game done right.

Smash Bros. is a crossover, and always has been. AstroBot was it's own IP - complete with it's own characters, worlds, enemies, etc. - before it was co-opted by Sony Corporate and turned into a Sony IP Showcase.

It's like if Nintendo made a new F-Zero, but turned it into Smash Kart or something. Is it really a new F-Zero at that point?

While not my favorite, I gotta say the recent Apple TV+ movie "Spirited" was extremely good. I'm not a big Ryan Reynolds fan but I like musicals and this movie filmed in Boston so I'm biased. It's an incredibly creative twist on the "A Christmas Carol" story.

Mild spoilers for the first 5 minutes:

I assumed it would be a retelling of the story, but it's actually a sequel - The Ghosts of Christmas Past/Present/YTC run their act annually on the worst person they can find. In 2022, that person is Ryan Reynolds' character. Will Ferrell (Christmas Present) wants to help him but his boss (Marley) says RR is an unredeemable lost cause.

I'm not a huge board/card game guy, but I fucking love Coup. The ultimate "easy to learn, hard to master" game. Takes all of 5 minutes to learn how to play and has given me hours of fun over the years. I know there's an expansion and likely will pick it up someday, but the base $15 game is IMO the perfect card game.

After several years of being the "I'm playing it as soon as I finish ________" game, and after two years of sitting in my Steam library, I finally started MASS EFFECT.

So far.... I'm whelmed. The universe seems rich and detailed and I've enjoyed digging in to the Codex entries as I've found them. But I'm a big gameplay > story guy (it took me 3 tries to get through RDR2) and hoo boy this is a game from 2007 alright. Movement is clunky, aiming is fucked (I had to dial look sensitivity down to 10%), and I feel like I've just been cheesing every combat encounter so far. I hope the gameplay gets better as I unlock more skills/companions.

FWIW, Apple just updated Vision OS to 2.0 and added the ability to convert regular 2D photos to "Spatial" photos via entirely on-device processing. The result feels like magic; like looking through a window through time. Even photos I took in high school on my cheap Samsung look incredible.

What really made my jaw drop, though, was converting my professional wedding photos. You can go "fullscreen" and zoom the photo until it fills your entire field of view. I can look at my wife wearing her wedding dress and holding her bouquet and it's like she's standing in the room in front of me.

I have spent hours over the last week or so converting old photos. Vacations, college, my childhood home, it all looks so incredible converted to 3D. I'm not surprised Apple has changed their store demos to let users experience their own photos like this.

The Martian will always hold a special place in my heart because I wrote Andy Weir (the author of the novel) some fan mail after I had finished the novel and he actually responded. Such a cool moment for a teenage geek.

[Preface: I do not consider myself a "Snyder Bro" and am very aware his movies have problems. I'm very excited for Gunn's Superman!] IMO BvS gets shat on a lot because it doesn't fit what Redditors/the general audience wanted from a Batman vs. Superman movie. And that's totally fine! But I think there's a lot to appreciate if you take the film for what it is. As much as I love when Superman is a paragon of virtue, I really appreciate Snyder showing us Clark as a man struggling with the consequences of what he does.

To get a little deeper, it's sort of like how society constantly tells us "Don't doubt yourself! March to the beat of your own drum! Power through!" but in reality people who do that tend to be fucking assholes. Self-doubt is an important part of being a good person. Snyder's Superman is the only film version to really show that inner conflict.
