If you liked "Hunting Warhead", there's also "The Children in the Pictures". Some consider it a sequel, but not nearly as good. Be aware that both are very hard to listen to.

Mary Ellen O’Connell, a professor of law and international peace studies at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, said booby-traps are banned under international law. “Weaponizing an object used by civilians is strictly prohibited,” she said.

I'm hosting my own Archivebox instance but it's not really a Archive.org clone I wish it was. It's nice to take snapshots of things I don't wanna lose, but Archive.org is way more advanced in what they do. I still dream of a proper self-hosted Internet Archive.

Sometimes I also crawl and copy some websites with wget, you can try that to see how it goes. Something like this:

    wget --wait=2 \
         --level=inf \
    	 --limit-rate=20K \
    	 --recursive \
    	 --page-requisites \
    	 --user-agent=Mozilla \
    	 --no-parent \
    	 --convert-links \
    	 --adjust-extension \
    	 --no-clobber \
    	 -e robots=off \
    	 https://example.com

Not sure if this has been shared before, but I was especially sad to read it. Lots of people had some kind of connection with Medo through watching his videos, one more outrageous murder....

It was another day of war in Gaza, another day of what 19-year-old Palestinian TikTok star Medo Halimy called his “Tent Life.”

They snapped a selfie — “Finally Reunited” Halimy captioned it on Instagram — and started catching up.

Then came a flash of light, 18-year-old Murad said, an explosion of white heat and sprayed earth. Murad felt pain in his neck. Halimy was bleeding from his head. A car on the coastal road in front of them was engulfed in flames, the apparent target of an Israeli airstrike. It took 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Hours later doctors pronounced Halimy dead.

Not sure if this has been shared before, but I was especially sad to read it. Lots of people had some kind of connection with Medo through watching his videos, one more outrageous murder.

A while ago Google removed JPEG XL support from Chrome. But recently Mozilla said their are considering a Rust implementation from the JPEG-XL team at Google Research, so maybe there's still hope for Chrome to start supporting it again. From my personal tests, it's my favorite new image format.

As much as I wish my daughter don't have the same unhealthy relationship with screens as we have when she's older, I wonder what the negative effects on her social life will be if we limit it to 2-3 hours when she's 13+ and all her friends are chatting all day and she's not.

If I understood their Preliminary Post Incident Review (PIR) correctly, they said they will implement all kinds of testing, including "Local developer testing" that I assume is asking their devs to test it. They published later the full report but I haven't read it. IIRC they only had automated testing to check the format of the file, but that failed.

That's why we have automation and processes in place to prevent this kind of thing. Especially considering how critical their products are, this sounds super amateurish.

I've been working on something interesting over the past weeks. I need to find specific text in 2.3 million images. The problem is that running Tesseract OCR takes a few seconds, sometimes minutes, depending on the complexity of each image. So I wrote a small Node.js server that controls that queue and I'm distributing the work between a few devices I have at home. The server stores the OCR text in a SQLite DB and does the text matching logic as well. Love this kind of little project!

I've considered running it in some cheap cloud, but free is better than cheap and I can wait a few days anyways. I would also have to store TBs of files somewhere, open my server to the internet, or make the server send work to the clients instead of clients calling the server.

Yeah, but they would still need review and approval from Google, right? They are kind of admitting with the "this new language" excuse.

When asked, Google communications manager Kayla Geier told The Verge that “#TeamPixel is a distinct program, separate from our press and creator reviews programs. The goal of #TeamPixel is to get Pixel devices into the hands of content creators, not press and tech reviewers. We missed the mark with this new language that appeared in the #TeamPixel form yesterday, and it has been removed.”

I used to watch it for hours every day. It got to a point I was using an extension to set it at 3x speed just so I could watch more stuff. One thing that helped was this Unhook extension that removes recommendations and redirect you to the "Subscriptions" page instead of home. Later I ended up subscribing to channels through my RSS reader NewsBlur so that means even fewer distractions.

Now, the difficult part is that you have to figure out why you do it and fix that. Otherwise you'll find a workaround or replace YouTube with TikTok, something like that. Are you too tired or depressed and just need some cheap dopamine with the least effort? Are you bored? FOMO?

For me, I used to be super anxious and that drained all my energy. Therapy helped a lot with that. A big part of it was FOMO as well, until I realised I'm not a robot and will have to be fine knowing I'll miss some stuff. Most of it is useless anyways, right? Nowadays I check latest videos from a few channels I like once or twice a week and that's enough for me.

Good luck my friend, I know it's not easy!
