Inspired to post this based on the typography article just posted. It's one of the most interesting design articles I've ever read, and I still find myself thinking about it every so often, even though I'm not into typography at all. As a native English speaker who uses a set alphabet, it had never occured to me before this article the difficulties in creating new fonts for a language like Mandarin.

The default set for English-language fonts contains about 230 glyphs. A font that covers all of the Latin scripts—that’s over 100 languages plus extra symbols—contains 840 glyphs, according to Březina. The simplified version of Chinese, used primarily in mainland China, requires nearly 7,000 glyphs. For traditional Chinese, used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the number of glyphs is 13,053.

David Bowie: Cracked Actor was possibly the first music doco I ever watched; it's incredibly interesting to watch Bowie at the height of his cocaine-addled existence, interspersed with great musical numbers.

Also, not a doco, but I feel like I have to mention Todd Haynes' I'm Not There, just because it's a masterpiece of a biopic. Like I said, not a documentary, but I imagine if Bob Dylan commissioned a film of his life, this is precisely what it'd look like.

With that list in mind, I'd encourage everyone to browse the top 20 or so posts on /r/all. Which of those posts would you keep?

Okay, decided to do this exercise. The ones I'd keep for a platform like Tildes would be:
#3: Joe Biden elected president of the United States (Link to news article)
#9: This is what happens when one company owns dozens of local news stations (Video of several news stations repeating lines almost verbatim)
#12..... to an extent: If this is you: Fuck you (Image of people hoarding toilet paper at the beginning of COVID. By 'to an extent', I mean I think the picture is worth sharing if it's accompanied with a different title, something like that. Could easily be replaced by a news link about hoarding.)
#15..... to an extent: Leaked Drone footage of shackled and blindfolded Uighur Muslims led from trains. As a German this is especially chilling. (Video of...well, it's in the title. Same caveat as the above, ideally.)
#17: "Everybody's trying to shame us" (Video of one of the Capitol guys talking about how they should be treated with respect, cut with various videos of police brutality in the BLM protests)

What rule would you use to filter them out?

Well, the first thing to note is that only one of my selected posts is an image (although I hemmed and hawwed about including #18: Private Internet Access, a VPN provider, takes out a full page ad in The New York Time calling out 50 senators.), and the one image post I chose was something I thought would be better as a link to a news article. In fact, #12, #15, and #18 all fall into that sort of category, where I think the information is valuable to be shared but I'm not 100% sure whether just posting the image/video is the best way to go about it.

    I guess, preliminary filtering mechanism:

    1. No memes, no selfies, no pets. This gets rid of #1 (no, not even if you're Rick Astley), #2 (arguably), #4, #7, #8, #13, #14, and #20.
    2. No posts that are purely references to cool things Tildes has done, or maybe limit to one update post? This eliminates #2 (again), #6, and #11. (All of which were Wallstreetbets posts)

That leaves #5 (My cab driver tonight was so excited to share with me that he’d made the cover of the calendar. I told him I’d help let the world see), which potentially falls under no selfies? Although it's a photo posted of someone else; #10 (Heat index was 110 degrees so we offered him a cold drink. He went for a full body soak instead), which potentially falls under no pets; #16 (Gas station worker takes precautionary measures after customer refused to put out his cigarette), which potentially falls under no memes - or maybe 'no memes' could be expanded to 'no posts that are purely for the sake of comedy?; and #19 (At a protest in Arizona). Although, actually, #18 and #19 probably both fall into the same "to an extent....." category I put #12 and #15 into, where it's like fine, but context/whatever.

Alternatively, could we somehow prime those submissions such that higher quality discussions organically emerged?

Maybe a catch-all rule/guideline that things should be posted for the purposes of discussion (not pure praise or outrage or whatever), and if your image/video doesn't accomplish this on its own, add text?

By priming discussion, as mentioned, I see that as most necessary with 12, 15, 18, and 19. Maybe even 17 as well, I was uncertain about that one. That's the kind of things where it seems to me that context given, or a question, or an article, or something would improve it. That seems to me like it could just work with a not-insubstantial text post accompaning the video/image, and by 'not insubstantial' I don't mean like a couple of paragraphs, just not something like "I made this" or "Thoughts?" or whatever.

Note: Edit primarily for the sake of including links to the posts.

I'm an actor! Am (hopefully) getting into screen as well, but most of my experience has been on stage.

Not in anything at the moment, because I'm moving to London in a couple of weeks! Will be joining Spotlight and Equity there, then agent/audition searching.

(I imagine the number of Aussies moving to the UK who are also actors on this forum is probably none, lol, but just in case - one of the ways to join UK Equity is to have a membership with another union under the same banner. And MEAA in Australia counts, and there's literally no barrier outside of like $10 a month or so - so join MEAA before making the move, and then use your membership to join UK Equity.)

Fair enough, it was a bit muddied the way I put it. I just meant, that my thinking I wanted to be a doctor in high school was not something I'd thought about much, hadn't really researched, and was mostly influenced by cool media portrayals of doctors.

This is very similar to the accusations (whether accurate or inaccurate) levelled at trans teenagers, or teenagers who think they're trans. That they haven't thought about it enough, haven't done enough research, and are influenced by media.

But people take this differently - when it comes to trans people, the fact that some teenagers are mistaken is weaponised against trans people who aren't mistaken. As if the fact that people thinking/saying they're trans when they're not is some sort of evidence against anyone who says they're trans. But nobody does that with doctors - we accept that teenagers don't think enough about these things, or change their minds, or have phases, or whatever. I want to be a doctor in year 10, change my mind in year 11. Nobody says to the other teenagers who want to be doctors, "Look, Hadrian changed his mind, so you're probably wrong as well!" But they say these things all the time to trans teenagers (and adults).

Does that make more sense? It's one of those analogies that's very clear in my head but not so clear when I say it out loud, lol

Actually, since this is in the interest of easy recipes, I'll give my easy go-to broth:

    An onion (halved)
Half a bulb of garlic (separated)
Whatever mushrooms I have on hand
Other veggies that I don't feel like eating but need to use up (for me, it's often carrots, because they're cheap and I also overestimate my tolerance for eating them lol)
Whatever herbs I have on hand that aren't used up, it's often coriander, parsley, or Thai basil
    Couple of centimetres of ginger
    Couple of bay leaves
Couple of things of star anise (this is key, it changes everything)
Maybe some veggie stock, depends on how long I have to let things simmer

And just as said above, bring to a boil and then let it simmer for however long you can, the longer the better. I wouldn't call it 'easy' in terms of time, because of that, but I would call it 'easy' in terms of prep, because it's just chopping a few things.

I specifically say "easiest" not "best", because sometimes we're tired after work and just want a five/ten minute thing.

I'm currently eating a bowl of my easiest salad, consisting of:

    Ingredients
    Can of chickpeas
Bunch of roquette (aragula for the Americans here)
Couple of handfuls of green beans
    Couple of tomatoes
    Alfalfa if you have it

    Dressing
    2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
    Olive oil
Swish of red wine vinegar (white wine vinegar would work as well, as would balsamic probably)
    Salt/pepper
    Lemon juice
    Dried dill (optional)

Looks like a lot, but if you have the ingredients it's super easy.

    1. Drain the chickpeas, put in a bowl, add all the dressing stuff.
    2. Stir, and also maybe mash some of the chickpeas for texture (I just use a fork and do both at the same time)
    3. Roughly chop up the tomatoes and green beans, add them and the roquette/alfalfa to the chickpeas, then eat.
      Takes like five minutes.

What are yours? I am so so often lazy and hungry. I need easy recipes.

I'd actually love an actual scientist to chime in here lol, because I just don't quite know enough to know what's safe here. Letting it cool down definitely seems sensible, I've tended to do some combination of that and sticking a chopstick in the bowl/mug when microwaving. (Although to be totally honest, I really just haven't microwaved water after learning about superheating, lol)

I mean, I get what you're saying to a certain extent. But also it's necessary to consider how transphobia exacerbates the impacts of kids/teenagers calling themselves trans when they're not.

(And also, the number of trans ppl shouldn't be conflated with the number of people who seek medical treatment. Even without every barrier, whether financial or social or whatever, medical intervention can be scary and can take time. I'm a 30 year old trans guy, realised at 28, and it took me a good year and a half of living as a man before going on hormones. It's a big decision, I wanted to be informed and also certain before I made it. Does that mean I wasn't trans up until a few months ago? Of course not.)

Re. transphobia impacting how trans people, and particularly trans teenagers, are read: I thought I wanted to be a doctor in high school, briefly. I didn't and was misguided. Nobody takes that as some sort of statement on doctors.

And they shouldn't, obviously. And if anyone takes that as a statement on doctors, or on kids/teens who legitimately want to be doctors, then that's obviously a problem with the people interpreting it that way, and not on the kid/teen who incorrectly thinks they want to be a doctor.

Obviously it's not a perfect analogy; among many differences, people choose to be doctors where, by and large, they don't choose to be trans. But many of the same things apply, namely that in most scenarios we don't (and shouldn't) take kids who are mistaken about their wants/identities as evidence against those who actually have those wants/identities.

This is potentially a bit late since you've already done it, but a plea to anyone reading to not put water in the microwave without adding in a chopstick or something, to avoid superheating.

Basically, when you heat water without sufficient impurities in it in a microwave, it can reach boiling point without actually boiling, and if you jostle it, it can explode, causing severe burns. I don't know whether lemon juice/vinegar introduces enough stuff to avoid this (someone who's more sciency than me may be able to comment?) but I've had a mug of water almost explode in my face because of this.

I have serious problems with scraping the web for these things - it's not unlikely anything posted anywhere ends up in a dataset somewhere, being used to train an AI for profit. There's probably someone scraping Tildes to use our comments to train an AI. I'm not a huge fan of current copyright law as it is, but I do think that if someone is going to use your work for profit, you should be compensated.

I've had some interesting conversations recently as an actor, because it seems like with AI, some companies are starting up the 'gathering data' stage. There have been a couple of casting calls put out recently for actors to come in for a few hours, be recorded, and their images/voices/etc. to be used for the purposes of AI.

The responses tend to be either that it's bad and nobody should do it, or that it should be heavily compensated - even moreso than in-perpetuity clauses. In-perpetuity clauses basically mean that there's no limit to how long and where an advertisement should be shown - most legitimate ads have for example 2 year buyouts, where they can show the ad for 2 years, but if they want to run it again they need to a) receive the actors' permission, and b) pay them more money. There's a general agreement that no actor should agree to in-perpetuity clauses, or at the very least that they should be paid an absolute ton of money - like in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The growing consensus on filming for AI purposes seems to be going along similar lines to in-perpetuity clauses, which makes a lot of sense.
