I don't think either of those would have been possible with an EV.
To your point if you're willing to modify trip plans to work around an EV you almost always can. But we aren't willing to compromise on our trip plans yet. It's unfortunate because I have a surplus of solar energy at home and free charging at work making fuel costs almost free but the other aspects don't work.
What we really need are affordable PHEV for people like me but the time to recoup the costs of that upgrade are longer than I'd own the car so doesn't make sense.

There are real practical issues to contend with beyond the psychological though.
The charging infrastructure is still very sparse relative to gas stations, fill up time is many multiples of what a gas fill up takes, and there are many issues with charging stations themselves. As a single car household this makes road trips significantly more difficult to the point we'd probably never bother again. Cold, remote mountainous camping destinations may also be ruled out or require careful planning. We just weren't willing to shut that door right now.

The irony of it all dawned on me recently - I hop from program to program usually seeking out efficiency improvements when, if I truly cared about results, I'd dig into a single approach and master it along with learning some bio science. But I don't care. The true impetus for shifting my routines is to try to keep me engaged and make getting my ass to the gym less of a slog. It kinda works. I still hate it, so, so much. Yet I go, MTThFS, minimum 15 minutes, every week, for close to 10 months now. It sucks but it feels good and the stomachs starting to pick itself up off the floor and last years health scare is feeling a little less scary so, yeah, I think I'll stay at it. I'll bitch and moan and hate it and curse these shitty knees and a younger me's stupid jackassery- but l'll stay.

One of them even asked if I wanted to "fix" it right then.
So now what I do is generate fake and obscure but plausible answers to these questions. First pets name? Bojangleboy. Favorite teacher? Mrs. Tornicholson. Etc.

If there are cars behind you make sure to get over to the left when a passing lane opens up. If you're from the US you probably expect to drive 10-15 over but that's not how it works there the speed limit really is the limit.
I don't have any specific resources for you but I would recommend checking out some YouTube videos for "driving in New Zealand tips" and do a search for the meaning of all the roadsigns.

If you're getting up near the top of the country -
Check out cape reinga for some beautiful views and just south of it are some bizarre sand dunes. Cooper's Beach is a great little beach town. Russell is also one of those picturesque cute small towns that's worth a visit.
In Auckland area-
Would definitely recommend the war museum. It's pricy for what it is but the space needle is popular and you can jump off it if you're so inclined! All the beaches are pretty great, I think we went to piha. Didn't have time for it but many locals recommended hot water beach.
Going further south-
Hobbiton was great, you'll love that. The geothermal pools in Rotorua and Polynesian spa are popular (so long as you can stand the smell!). Tepatu if you want a unique interactive cultural experience. If you happen to be kiwi lovers like us 1000% recommend the private kiwi tour at the national kiwi hatchery (fills up many months in advance so don't wait on that one if you're interested)
In general -
Driving was pretty easy imo if you pay attention to signage but recommend reading up on how the roads work there, expect windy roads and to hit roadworks VERY frequently so know how to negotiate that.
Make sure to get into some bakeries for some authentic savory pies (butter chicken and steak+cheese are the BEST). Take back some lollies(candy) like Jaffas, pineapple lumps, and try some fijeoa and L&P.Have fun!

- Idk
- I had what I thought was sewer gas issues turned out to just be drain lines that had a lot of buildup. Get some cheap plastic drain snakes and try that before digging into expensive repairs. You'll need a drain snake at some point regardless. The caps on the drains for showers can be pulled up with a screw driver, the other drains you can just go straight in. Also prepare yourself for the smell of death.
- Last couple places I've lived I've had a shower that does that. I assume it's just a buildup of water at the end of the showerhead which is in an unstable balance between gravity and pressure. Kind of like having water in a straw with thumb over the top- it won't drain out unless something perturbs the water. To my knowledge this is normal.
- I had the same issue on that same type of setup. In my case I was able to resolve it with clearing the plastic water inlet. The process was shutoff the water, find where the cold water exits into the tank which is a plastic cap about an inch or so around, remove the cap, place an inverted cup over this water outlet, turn on the water all the way and let it run for a couple minutes, then turn off water and put it all back together.

We got to explore the train system, hike through a little city, meet some sheep, chat with some real small town locals at a small town pub, and the house itself was really interesting. You definitely don't have to do that but I'd really recommend finding something interesting outside the heart of the city to explore while you're there.

Comment on How do you keep your home smelling nice? in ~life.home_improvement
I've been tracking calories in an app for close to a year now and am hitting my monthly weight loss goals. Imo the secret is to not worry about it so much and not create a disruption by using quick, ballpark estimates. For the first couple months you have to make sure to dial in your total calories goals as the initial estimates for my metabolic rate were way too high (or more likely, I tend to guess low, but same difference). I also really like "cheat days" so the lever to watch and adjust is total calories per week but I split that up into 4 days low calorie and 3 days fat kid diet. I also treat is as an absolute limit, there is no going over I just won't eat anymore. If that means going to bed hungry so be it- I should have planned better and will remember that lesson next time Im considering the double mcGriddleSausagePancake meal for breakfast. That hasn't been an issue passed the very beginning though.
