I know it's not "an argument", but this comment gave me a visceral reaction of "I don't want to go on this site anymore", more than anything else I've seen on Tildes in a long time.

Did you come up with this independently?

Depends what you mean by "this". Obviously this is drawing influence from a lot of different places. The idea of uploading has existed for ages in science fiction, and so has the idea that uploading is a potentially bad idea. You see this in Altered Carbon, in Surface Detail... I've never played SOMA but it's not at all surprising to me that it examines similar concepts. I very briefly touched upon this concept myself in Ra ("Data can't defend itself!"). The story of Henrietta Lacks was very thought-provoking for me, and obviously the Lena standard test image is kind of where all of this starts. Then I'm throwing in what I already know about software and virtualisation technology...

I guess it's also because they shorten it as "Et CeTera" instead of "ET Cetera".

I would be careful with calling someting a "fun ethical exercise" when you're talking about the rights of a marginalized group. It's not just a thought experiment, it affects real people.

Doesn't that cost you a fortune in bandwidth? I thought that the outgoing transfer prices for AWS would make this much more expensive than the alternatives.

As the story goes, the artists had created all of these animation cycles for their game, and it had to pass through the review stage of a project manager. One of the artists knew the way these guys tended to want to "leave their mark" on things, and did something a little extra.
Apparently, the queen was given a little companion. As she came to life and moved around, so did the duck. It would just follow her around the board.
Supposedly, the PM saw this and said "it's great... just remove the duck". So, the artist went in and removed the duck (which had been carefully placed to make that easy), and that was that. The sacrificial duck kept the meddling manager away from the stuff that was important.
