    Like dihydrogen monoxide.

Admittedly, you bringing up the formaldehyde scare had me look deeper into it for myself. Turns out it's a cancer risk if it's inhaled, but it's part of the metabolic process in mammals, including human. If nothing else, this just makes me think of the aforementioned parody even more.

That's understandable, yeah. If I'm to be completely honest, I get a bit of that feeling lately when I was waiting for the settlement to progress through the project construction. I think for me, part of it is because I'm here for the new settlement feature and I'm forced to wait to see it all. Not to mention a new expedition is coming soon, so whatever I do in my current save has no impact on the expedition character I'll have to make. Only previous expeditions have any real impact beyond the save I did the content in.

Sometimes, I take it as a good thing. Having no pressure to fulfill any objectives, I'm free to just do whatever i feel like in the moment and relax.

Out of curiosity, what do you think they could've done to make the game feel less nihilistic to you?

It really highlights the difference in design philosophy between the two games. At its core, ED was meant to be a more faithful simulation, but they also kept in mind the gaming aspects (frameshift drives allow us to cover massive distances). NMS seems catered to a more casual playstyle. What I find interesting is that they both have means to close the gap between celestial bodies but I think what drives that feeling to smallness in NMS is the fact that all the planets look ridiculously close to one another. They're scattered throughout space, rather than in orbit around a star. And the star is just part of the skybox.

Personally, I'd be way happier if they had done what ED did. Generate more true-to-life systems, and give us either a system map, a viewing mode that gives you information of detected celestial bodies, or both.

I still enjoy NMS, but it definitely doesn't scratch the same itch as ED did.

I participated in a gamejam that required the use of ink, a narrative scripting language that can either export to web or integrated with existing game engine. It was the first time I've completed a gamejam, rather than quit on the last day because I felt I was in over my head so I'm pretty happy about that. It's currently in th voting process and so far, I've gotten positive feedback, so yay!

So I guess 20 is probably a good time to start splitting people up, LOL.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Good word of warning :)

I would imagine if they were identical, the resource consumption shouldn't be too much more than doubled, right?

I don't know if Solid Content is a "pro" at the game. He certainly didn't position himself that way. That said, here's a playlist of his let's play videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMKy7szGWw9EB6mPvz4hgVCbpwKaxiLZt

I think the approachability of DSP for me is the 3D feeling of it too. The fact that you can stack some of the buildings like splitters, conveyor belts, storages and research labs granted a flexibility I didn't find in Factorio.

Funny thing is, the more I play these factory building simulator games, the more I do want to give Factorio another shot. It was like that when I played shapez.io. Having so much of it abstracted to its basic form, plus infinite supply of everything (including the space you build in), made a lot of concepts easier to stick in my head.

As for building too compact, I didn't leave myself enough room to expand and add more assemblers and the like early on. To be fair, it did create a new set of challenges for me to overcome so it's not too bad!

I picked up and played the following 4 games during the Steam Summer Sale:

    Superliminal

Starting with the one I finished first. I remember watching an in-dev video over in one of the gamedev subreddits, demonstrating the size changes with the object in hand. Then I mostly forgot about it over time. A buddy of mine mentioned the idea of streaming it, so I looked at the game again. I didn't want to watch him play the game and spoil it for me if I wanted to experience it myself!

The game have been compared to Stanley Parable, which feels more like a surface-level comparison. There's some humor, but it felt more puzzle-focused rather than a walking simulator type of game. A little bit more like Portal 2, I suppose. The story is also fairly short (Steam says I had the game running for about 4+ hours) and doesn't have multiple endings. At least nothing in the game suggested multiple endings.

    Spoilers about the end

I actually enjoyed the message at the end. I can't remember it word for word but the doctor (narrator at this point) pointed out that we tend to avoid the problems in our lives. That we're afraid of failing to overcome them. But by taking on a different perspective, looking at it from a different angle, may we find the solution we need to solve the problems we were struggling with.

The message came at a time where I've been avoiding my own issues. In some way, I still am, but to have a game tell me to try and look at it differently was a bit of a wake-up call for me.

It left an impression on me, regardless of how helpful it was in the end.

    Craftopia

This game is still kind of rough. Some translations are clearly still in first draft or missing. Despite all that, my experience with it has been pretty chill. I play it at "Enjoy" difficulty though, which makes the combat way more forgiving.

The game's been review bombed after the studio announced a new IP. But as far as I can tell, they're still working on this game so I'm choosing not to worry about that.

    Dyson Sphere Program

This was the first game I got from the sale. It's very much like a 2.5D Factorio, but you're not limited to the one world. I ran into the same frustration as I had with Factorio, shapez.io, and Satisfactory in the past: building too small and too compact in the beginning. The factories from the start are still there, but I took an experience I learned and cultivated from shapez.io and opened myself up to reshaping and rebuilding some of it.

Eventually, I'll have to tear it all down when the vein's tapped out but it felt like a growing experience for me. I'm pretty happy with the game facilitating that.

So far, I've expanded to the other two rocky bodies in the planetary system I'm in...but my research progress is well ahead of my production progress! I've researched the means to use logistic drones and to transfer products between planets, but I haven't started building the factories to produce them yet!

All I'm doing now is stockpiling the research cubes (research currency used in the game) while my production starts catching up.

...maybe I'll jump back in tonight and see if I can make any progress.

    Space Haven

I'm starting to notice the games I got seem to be similar to another existing game. This one has been compared to RimWorld. I couldn't get into RimWorld to save my life. I'm starting to suspect it's the lack of Space :)

It's basically a spaceship (fleet) management simulator, rather than a colony simulator that RimWorld is. The isometric pixel art aesthetics appealed to me and it's been fun watching the crew go about doing their work. I like that I can change up their schedule and draft them to explore. I'm sure not all this is unique to Space Haven. I haven't played it long enough to give a more in-depth opinion of it either. I'm still in the starting system! I have watched the dev's livestream on Steam Solid Content's videos (broadcasted by the dev on Steam) and he has at least two large ships in his fleet. I'm looking forward to it!

Ultimately, I have zero regrets over my purchases :D they've all been pretty solid and I've been rotating between them since I've bought them.

I wasn't a fan of playing with pubs for a long time. I'm only just recently..."coming out of my shell" about it. It's definitely handy when I want to just level gear up, but I've definitely ran into situations where it would've been better if I just solo'ed it instead.

Ultimately, I love that WF gives you the option to play how you want. It's just a shame when the method we choose ends up boring us. That's usually why I end up dipping out of the game in the past. Hopefully this pandemic will be over sooner and you and your friends can play together again IRL :D

Warframe is one of those games I go back to every so often. To be fair, I got some exp (affinity) boosters and a credit (currency) booster so it helped incentivize me to keep going. I finally reached master rank 27. Took the time to reacquaint myself with some of the warframes I've levelled and forgot about.

Valheim, but solo. I used to play with my partner but life circumstances has made that practically impossibile 😞 I doubt I'll progress as far as we did together. I'm still wary about clearing out delves by myself. I really enjoy the structural stability mechanics so I've spent more of my time building and chopping down trees (and running away from falling logs) than hunting.

Outriders (Demo) and hopefully, the full game after I graduate! I know the story's gotten mixed reception but I really want to see how it progresses and concludes. Plus, the devs have been forthcoming and actively worked to make the demo fun and less cheesy (dev update here). That earned a little bit of my trust that they'll care enough about the full game to keep up that kind of effort. I'll be keeping an eye on them between the game's release and when I graduate, which is about a month after release.

Imagining what it's like to be his family and dealing with this was hard...but at the end, the phrase "the shattered roadway of his mind" really highlighted the horror of Lee's situation.

My current answer to your question is, "it depends."

In my opinion, it depends on the artist, their beliefs and the execution/presentation of the piece. I suspect the people complaining about Paul Yore's piece may have lacked the context to appreciate or understand the intended. The article mentioned how he had shown the piece to others and received support, but they likely knew who he is (or was quickly filled in otherwise).

As for execution/presentation, I tried to look at the piece without the context of the artist and I can see how people could consider it homophobic. It repeats the vitriol hurled at the LGBTIQA+. The figures are depicted in an almost monstrous way. There's nothing in there that I could personally interpret as one gay man's struggle against the hate. But I could more easily interpret it as the ramblings of a staunch homophobe living in an echo chamber.
