An AI killing machine kicking my front door down in the next 15 minutes may prompt me to think carefully, if briefly, about my mortality and legacy and ancestors and my children's children's children's children and shared humanity and whether or not being imminently rendered limb from limb is a shame or if it's all for the best if it allows our superior invention to thrive.
Yet that consideration is very different from my kids little fingers having an extra millimeter of flexibility compared to mine as an adaptation to their mode of life and fitness for procreation, and that rate of adaptation cascading over thousands of generations resulting in a human-derived AI-based lifeform making the decision to phase out archae-humans.
The first example is unavoidably centred around my desire not to be bodily and culturally chopped up in to little bits by a computer, whereas the second example happens almost completely unnoticed, and even the end decision is something of a non event.

We're at the stage where the concept of free speech is often if not mostly a very thinly veiled desire to be ignorant or racist with impunity. Most people don't really want that, and neither do most advertisers. So what does that leave free speech meaning, and to what degree?
There is never and can never be a perfect answer. That said I think I'd argue that Reddit in its early days was very close to ideal in that users up voted and down voted content based on whether or not it added to the discussion, as opposed to as a measure of agree or disagree. It's just got too big for that now and too big to not have serious problems. The comment by Zonk (no idea how to tag other users) hits the nail on the head; find smaller forums aligned to each interest.
Edit: a word

My concern about this piece is potentially muddying the waters and deflecting from the almost omnipotence of the large housebuilders. The government has close links with the most powerful property developers and housebuilders, and indeed enacted direct subsidies to housebuilders under the guise of helping out first-time-buyers.
These companies, if they chose, could build beautiful, sturdy, spacious, well-planned, environmentally conscious and socially conscious developments, but that's generally not what happens, and they generally prefer that not to be the conversation.

Had that one issue been better addressed earlier there would never have been a need for UKIP.
Absolutely that's not to say another more general right wing party wouldn't have become prominent, but most likely not wrapped up in such an unrelated issue.

My thinking is the more people feel represented the less the need to resort to extremism. We may have seen some rightward shift in the Overton window but not necessarily anything like we're seeing now.

I'm as keen as anyone for this place to not become yet another den of intolerance. Does not having those groups help in avoiding such a descent or does it risk becoming a feel-good but ultimately uninformative echo chamber?

'Contribution' maybe but 'cause' might be a bit of a stretch, given there's no comparison with lithium consumption in other countries, whereas there are good comparisons of sugar and fat intakes and activity levels.
