It's hard not to want to keep finding new projects, so I don't try to stop, BUT I try to build a buffer in or set rules.

For example: Want to learn some new thing? Great! Spend an hour looking at it, then wait a few days or a week. If the urge pops up, try to do some more research, find someone who has done it, make a list of practical reasons the skill would be useful, etc. If after a week or so the burn is still there and I have a good list, then plan it into my life in a reasonable way (this fights all the urges to just spend 36 hours straight trying to cram the knowledge).

For actually getting work done, I try to build a routine so I do it at a specific time (even if not every day, I look at what I have to do and say "at 10am I'm doing this" and set an alarm. This works for some things, but if I realize I'm resisting something, I just set a focusmate session and do it then. 90% of the time that works because I set an appointment with someone to work on my own stuff.

I've tried to read Red Mars about 3 different times but I'm lost WAY early in the book. I can't even figure out who the characters are and such. Feels like a lot of work every time, but I've heard so many good things about it I keep thinking maybe there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Honestly, the bigger part of this is getting into the habit of sitting down at your desk for 15 minutes at the same time each morning. That should be your goal. Grab a cup of coffee and sit there. The rest will work itself out eventually, but putting pressure on yourself to crank out a book or produce x number of words or whatever places a huge burden and taints it. It's a walk in the woods, not a 5k run. Just be there for whatever happens and you will be posting snips of writing soon enough.

If you find yourself avoiding it once you've dedicated yourself to sitting at your desk, it's time to ask if you really want to even be writing. It's totally fine if the answer is no. There is plenty going on without crushing yourself under word debts.

    Best of luck to you.

I've used one for years and recommend them to everyone. Even if you only use it a little, you have the option. There are weeks where I sit most of the time and I feel it. I stand for interviews (and have been favored for it), meetings, general work, etc. I usually sit for focus work that I need to think a lot for (reporting, detailed emails, etc), but even some of that works well with standing.

Being able to make small adjustments is huge as well. Sometimes a centimeter or. Two is great, even just to be in a slightly different anglr. Sometimes i sit but force the desk higher than is reasonable just to work for a few minutes with a stretched spine.

I splurged and got 4 wall mounted monitors, a rollermouse red mouse, and a barracco split keyboard. I tried a treadmill, but it's hard to do so i just go on walks or do bodyweight exercise when able.

There is also research that sitting 8 hours per day is equivalent to smoking, so it's worth the change.

As for chairs, i had a fancy chair or two, but found a great one for $375 at a furniture store that works well.

Thanks for the info. I always get some high end samsung phone, but easily get caught in loops where I'll check socials too much. I've had some success reading instead of socials on breaks, but it doesnt always last.

I use a minimalist app to make the phone text based (no icons) and hide the tempting apps. There is a feature that asks how long i want to be on and will either close it or warn me when time is up.

It helps me be a little more mindful, but essentially just makes it 10 clicks instead of 1 to get where I want to go (a mild inconvenience).

At the same time, i do use the web for good stuff most of the time, and it's rare that I'm sucked away in socials, despite being active on them. I'm intenional for the most part (although you cant control what comes at you) so it works out.

I'll look into the lightphone just to see. Thanks for sharing!

I haven't seen MS Fabric yet, but it seems like a big deal. One of the biggest challenges around data is finding ways to make it meaningful for busy people who don't typically deal with it, but need to make decisions based on it.

If it can write a decent report, that would be enough for most people.

That's the utopian dream, isn't it? :) They will leverage all that knowledge to hit you with an ad when you are at your weakest. "Would you like me to add pepto bismol to your shopping list?" as it listens to you puking away! :)

What you are describing sounds amazing though, and I think it would truly be a game changer for so many. It really is within the realm of feasibility also, and honestly, I was hoping to see more evolutions toward just that kind of use case!

    Here's hoping.

Yeah, this is the big issue with truly supportive technologies being geared toward making money. I said in another reply that i was able to create and add/remove to lists with these devices. You could keeo a GTD system verbally and it was useful, but they want me to order pizza, which I would never do through alexa, so they converted this to shopping lists. It advertises to me endlessly when i ask what's in the news. It makes suggestions on some premium package when i ask it to play sleep sounds. I'm being crushed by ads so i dont have to manually play spotify and set timers!

I was hoping for an actual assistant, who can do things you would pay an assistant to do in a small business, but they are so limited. The alexa skills seemed promising, but they didnt offer the customization I was hoping for (such as listening to audiobooks on apps other than audible).

Yeah, I use all of those features as well, and have both google amd alexa devices throughout the house, but they don't do anything I would pay an actual assistant to do in a small business. THAT's what I want! An actual virtual assistant to set appointments for me, find time in my calendar, research things, email people, review notes and documents, etc. Truly time saving things
