First getting into music in the late 80's/early 90's I listened to everything from my dad's 60's rock and folk albums to modern rock, metal, punk, pop, and hip hop. When grunge took off I was immersed in alternative rock until the late 90's when I got more into metal. After that it seemed like I would go years at a time where I wouldn't find anything new that I liked aside from some old favorite bands releasing new albums. Then I would just have a period of finding all sorts of new stuff I liked. Ever since a phase in the early-mid 2000's when I was listening to a lot of new hip hop I have really mostly been into alternative and indie rock with a little bit of EDMish music thrown in. It seems like I would forget about it for a few years, then catch up on all the stuff I missed. That was, until we got a new car with Sirius XM. Now I have a constant stream of new alternative music that always contains at least some new stuff that I like.
The one genre I could never deal with though is country. I don't know if it came from growing up in farm country and listening all these wannabe cowboys blasting Garth Brooks while driving around in their jacked up duallys that don't fit into a parking space thinking they are king shit, but I cannot tolerate country music.

Normally the big players are horrible at online culture stuff like this, as evidenced by the referenced "infamous hacker 4chan" incident and the fact that they usually just seem to run with stories from smaller online rags when something gets big enough for them to take notice. Kudos to them for actually getting someone who can understand this stuff to research and/or write for them.

Things have grown since then, when you have 1,500+ servers to manage picking cool names really doesn't work. Aside from the difficulty in always having to look up what servers do what and just plain running out of ideas, really it comes down to "ain't nobody got time for that". It is kind of sad really, I still remember the day Elmo was retired and the last of the muppet servers was relegated to the recycling pallet, replace by a boring CHI-MAIL-04.

rake_tm I fully agree, to me the incomprehensible scale of universe is the best explanation for both why there is likely other intelligent life and why we haven't found them yet.I fully agree, to me the incomprehensible scale of universe is the best explanation for both why there is likely other intelligent life and why we haven't found them yet.

It is already legal to manufacture your own non-serial numbered firearms as long as you don't sell them and you follow all the other rules, include the law about having enough metal embedded in the gun to set off a metal detector. The hysteria about untraceable, undetectable guns was dumb last time, and it is dumb again.

I really wasn't expecting Snowcrash since nothing else he has done since was the same, but I think in my head I was prepared for another book similar to the Baroque Cycle series, which obviously it wasn't really. I guess I liked it more than Zodiac, The Interface, and Reamde, but not as much as most of the others.

It really is amazing how such intelligent people can do such dumb things.

I haven't found any sci-fi that has kept me engaged that much since finishing The Nexus trilogy and Neal Stephenson's latest book. My main problem with a lot of sci-fi books is that they are so short, as soon as I get into them they are over. Why can't more authors pump out 1,000 page novels to actually keep me going for a little while :)

rake_tm What kind of ARM hardware are you running your home servers on?What kind of ARM hardware are you running your home servers on?
This is definitely a factor. Luckily i have one friend who is really into music and is always searching for new stuff, but we both have really narrowed the genres we listen to as we have gotten older. To make up for that I like to harass the interns at work for Spotify playlists to broaden my horizons a bit :)
