Excellent! Thanks for the follow-up. I'll have to give them a try. I'm enjoying Google Play Music but want to see about branching out to other services.

I want to say I used Spotify a few years back but wound up souring to it because of its close ties to FB. I don't want to hold it against them though if that isn't the case.

Similar for me. I was searching on Reddit for Reddit Alternatives and came across Tildes in a comments section. That it is setup as a non-profit was of huge interest to me. I was lucky enough to get an invite through a request thread and then found my way here.

I will likely pop onto Reddit from time to time for some of my hobbies which haven't fleshed out quite as much here as of yet (meadmaking, Star Trek, Firefly, etc.) but I can't get over how great the conversation is here. Maybe it's rose-colored glasses and I just haven't been exposed enough but the dialogue seems more mature and disagreements are met with healthy discussion, as opposed to trolling and just yelling at one another.

Anyway, regardless, I'm a big fan of Tildes and hope that it continues to prosper as a place for folks to meet and chat.

And thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough response. The neck pain is definitely something I'm looking to prevent and the alignment of my chair/desk is probably something I'll need to look at.

Out of curiosity, have you ever considered a standing desk (potentially even one of those walking treadmill) setups? I've been considering both as well as I'm trying to find the best situation to work in possible.

That's fantastic! Thanks for your response and posting the example! I'm definitely enjoying it. Have you ever messed around with recording video for it as well?

In response to the ergonomics (which I totally hadn’t taken into consideration when I first started working from home) does your job require a lot of looking at computer screens? And, if so, would you recommend something like blue-light filtering glasses? I’ve been considering something like that as I stare at multiple screens for upwards of 8 hours a day, but didn’t know if they were truly effective or a placebo.

I’d let him in but then that’s a whole new level of distraction going on.

    Hello!

I’m a musician that’s looking into recording video of myself as I’m playing at my home and then uploading it to YouTube. I was wondering if there were any users out there that do something similar and what type of setup you have/would suggest if there are. I play acoustic, no electronic pickup.

I appreciate any suggestions and hope everyone has a great day!

I came across C.S Lewis before Tolkien when I was younger and, when I became older, wasn’t surprised in the least when I found out the two were friends and writing colleagues. Both do such a wonderful job of, like you said, opening up interests and hobbies with the worlds they created.

There’s a book, by Christopher Moore, called Lamb. The book is a satirical (some may say sacrilegious) take on the life of Joshua of Nazareth (Jesus) and his childhood friend, Biff. Though, ultimately, I’d argue the story is more about the bonds of friendship and the things we’ll do for the people we choose to be family.

One of the unexpected side-effects the book left me with was this humanized concept of Jesus that, even as an ardent and “preachy” atheist at the time, I could find myself appreciating. That book, and the themes/concepts it envoked, were more “Christian” in value than any other literature, sermon, or group I’d been expected to be a part of by my community or friends growing up.

I’m agnostic now and I credit some of that shift to the book and the questions it raised.

Ultimately, I don’t expect anyone to have monumental changes in their theological beliefs based off reading the book. But it’s a great story about the bonds that bring us together and one of the reasons I’m comfortable now, as a 30-something year-old man saying out loud to my male best friends that I love them and want them to know that.

A big challenge I had to overcome when I started working from home was dealing with expectations of my supervisors. One of them was clear in that they’d never be able to work from home because they’d be too distracted to get anything done and my first challenge was showing that would not be an issue.

It took a lot to prove it but I’m just as productive working from home (if not more so, sometimes) than my colleagues in the office.

All that in mind, my advice in response to the original question would be something similar about don’t get distracted. I treat my home office like an office and when I’m in there, I’m at work, not at home.

Brandon is such a great guy. I was in line with some friends at DragonCon and saw him walking up the sidewalk. I freaked out a bit and he saw that I recognized him. He stopped and chatted with our group for several minutes and fielded a few of our questions. Just a genuinely nice person and, combining that with his writing, you wind up with an awesome guy.

Big fan of his. I’ll have to check out that music as I just finished Oathbringer.

You know, I’d never really listened to a lot of Disturbed before but a few weeks back I came across their cover of “The Sound of Silence” and jeez. I was floored by how good it was.
