I always had difficulty with comic books— they’re hard to read because I get visually distracted easily so my eye jumps around the page too much and I have to really concentrate to read it in order. Webcomics, though, might be better for me because there tends not t be too much content on a single page! I juat started Check, Please! and am finding it really charming!

Yep, I am on DW too! I have a moderately active friend list there, but... it’s remarkable how much effort it now seems to actually make a post there, compared to the zero effort required for instagram, twitter, etc. I feel pretty pathetic calling that “high effort,” but... here we are. But yes, definitely higher reward too.

Every so often I’ll follow a link to LJ from when a DW community used to be hosted there, though, and be like “aw damn look at this place.”

This seems ludicrous, but then again, I still find myself on Livejournal every so often, so who am I to talk.

I agree, none of them deserve your vote. And it sucks ass that this keeps happening, over and over again, “vote for the person who’s most able to beat the giant fucking dumpster fire!” But... that’s what this is. The NDP is the only non-insane way to vote.

I would do BJJ. The only reason I don’t is that I’m a professional musician and BJJ carries a high risk of injury to the hands and fingers, but if I could take a few years off, not do musical work, and learn a new skill... ugh yes. I dis it for a few months, and it was a revelation. Trying to roll when I had no idea wtf I was doing was one of the most exhilarating feelings I’ve ever experienced.

Re-reading two eternal favourites: Infinite Jest, and making my way through all the Sherlock Holmes stories.

IJ: can’t even really be described to anyone who hasn’t read it. But I know I would not have made it through university without that book/ finding DFW at the right time.

Sherlock Holmes, god. These stories are so dumb and sloppy and inconsistent and I love them absolutely unconditionally.

I loved Seveneves. I’ve loved almost all the Stephenson I’ve read, and my favourite thing about him is that he can be shamelessly didactic (like with the inclusion of whole section of endnotes in Anathem that are literally just geometry lessons) and he trusts you to stick with him, and it’s worth it.

Also, I kind of love that he obviously is invested in working on his weaknesses as a writer. Like, two of the biggest criticisms of him that I’ve heard are his sometimes coldly unemotional treatment of plot, and that his women are... not believable characters pretty much ever. I am in the probably minority of ardent Stephenson fans who are female, and honestly I do not care at all that most of his characters are thinly disguised versions of himself. But I gotta respect him for being like “heh I’ll show ‘em” and writing a book where everyone on earth dies but seven ladies, in a scene that was genuinely heart-wrenching. I think I actually cried when Earth was destroyed, and then stopped in surprise that I was crying at something freaking Neal Stephenson wrote.
