I really love Firewatch, though it does have stressful parts, I classify most of the game as cozy. I go back and replay it from time to time, it's a great experience.

Gorgeous, complex themes, genuinely intellectually engaging narrative, and just an atmosphere I can't really describe. I hope you have fun with it.

I think I agree with your broad idea here but I don't think means-testing has any benefit. I think requiring you to go get a transit pass, like a library card, for access to the transit network...

I think a good, pragmatic balance would be to offer to low/no-income people and youths free transit cards that are linked to their identities and can be suspended or revoked after X number of misbehavior in a certain time period.

I think I agree with your broad idea here but I don't think means-testing has any benefit. I think requiring you to go get a transit pass, like a library card, for access to the transit network could be a great way to manage unruliness and petty crimes. But, I think only offering free fare to the poor and the young would only increase bureaucratic overhead (verifying means) and social resentment (muh entitlements). Also, just generally IMO, systems funded by the public should be available to the entire public. Tourist-heavy cities maybe could charge for access to non-residents, though, subsidizing the transit system for the people who depend on it with money from the people who can afford a vacation.

Its development was also extremely rushed. As-is, it exists as a minimum viable product. I would expect we'll get a more feature-rich app and some kind of web interface in the future.

First time I've ever bought a movie on Blu-ray. I think the person above got so caught up un the philosophical metaphors they missed the good story.

Back when I was in high school car insurance would've been ~$6,000/year for me, so the only affordable option for me to get to school was a motorcycle. I wanted to get a $1,500 Chinese 249cc Enduro motorcycle, but my parents thought I'd end up losing a leg if I drove something you had to straddle, so they demanded I get a large-engine scooter instead. Ended up with a $500 Aprilia 250cc 2010-or-so piece of shit I got from some 70 year old in Florida. Real piece of shit, and the battery cable kept coming loose so it was super unreliable, but it lasted me until my school shut down for COVID, then the engine blew up. Got my $500 out of it in utility, at least.

I still want to get a $1,500 Chinese shitbike to have some cheap fun with, but I'm gonna wait on it until I'm out of college. There's a medium-size online community for "china bikes", but I wish there were more people interested in them IRL. Probably the cheapest real vehicle you can get.

I always get frustrated with the Washington Post because I'll see an article that sounds really interesting every so often from a news feed and then get hit with the paywall when I go to read it. The thing is, I'm totally willing to pay the $4 a month or whatever it is they keep offering me but every time I sign up for a subscription the website is so broken it never actually takes the paywall down. I'm not sure if I'm individually cursed by the CEO or something, but it makes me miss the days of print media. I always have to end up searching for whatever the topic is and finding a similar articles on other sites.

If you ever get the chance, listening to ATC at AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI is always somewhat entertaining. I went in 2021 and listened while a bunch of the homebuilt and ultralight aircraft were coming in. It was insane hearing a different plane calling in every 10-15 seconds.

One of my friends gave me a few dozen books she didn't want anymore when she left for college out of state, I think she got most of them from the discount bin at the local Barnes n Noble. I discovered that she gave me a copy of The Brothers Karamozov when I bumped into my bookshelf and had to pick up a bunch of fallen books. Is it a book that you can pick up and read or do you need background knowledge for it to be relatable as a story?

Do you make it from scratch or do you mold those soap bricks you can get online into usable human-proportioned soap pieces? I have negative memories from when my mother decided to try making laundry soap from lye with some random ass recipe she found online, so in my mind the scratch route sounds like a lot of trouble.

What's it like being a cosmologist as a career? I'm curious because I'm an engineering student who just started an internship where I do engineer things for the first time. I had no idea what to expect going in, but over the past few weeks I'm starting to suspect that "technical jobs" like scientist and engineer are 95% email and 5% technical work. When you go to work, would you say you spend a majority of your time writing emails or collecting data / performing data analysis / surveying existing research?

Hello reader, I'm theslothofgaston. Like most here, I'm a redditor who heard about this website from /r/redditisfun. I am impressed by the effort and quality of most of the discussion going on here, so I look forward to lurking/commenting. I'm a mechanical engineering student by trade, so as soon as there's an engineering community here I'll be frequenting it. Casually interested in anime and gaming, but mostly interested in politics and engineering.
