McDonald’s has been testing drive-thru voice AI since 2021. That test followed the company’s sale of its McD Tech Labs to IBM that year.

I love how they develop this in house (after buying a different company), sell it to IBM so they can partner on it, and then ditch them saying they're provably going to go with someone else anyways. What a roller coaster.

Also is it me or is that article mostly corporate nonsense? Maybe I'm just tired.

I don't know how it is on the Gnome version you interact with, but, in my experience, Gnome feels like the product of a fanatical dedication to minimalism.

PopOS's tweaked version of GNOME seems normal to me. You still end up using the windows key to then type the name of the application you want to open, but I was using MacOS before and that's kind or the workflow there as well. They also have the extension that adds the thing at the bottom that's just like the MacOS dock so most apps I use get pinned there anyways.

Edit: and of course you can put stuff on the desktop. Why GNOME, why do you do that.

I'm not really clear on the vulnerability but it sounds like it works as long as your WiFi is on (maybe needs to be connected to a network). With Starbucks (as an example) you can do things to mitigate the risk but it sounds like this vulnerability could bypass that. Also, maybe you're vulnerable on your own secure wifi network.

MS Teams has a Linux app that I use from time to time but MS Office doesn't. Libre Office works and opens Word files but sometimes formatting gets thrown off... Excel files open and works just fine for the simple spreadsheets I need but if you're doing macros then its going to give you problems.

I just accept that some stuff doesn't work on Linux. I use Linux on my desktop computer and have a Macbook for when I need MS Office or a laptop.

Is insurance going to cover IVF procedures 10 years down the line? I don't know what insurance companies would think but it sounds like a ton of money and would remove the chance of having a more natural... process (??). IDK, it weirds me out a little.

Besides all that, in the article they describe a procedure that's like a temporary vasectomy performed by injecting a gel into the tubes (I lost my spot and I don't know the term)

Injecting the gel, called ADAM, involves a single, 15-minute procedure, said Kevin Eisenfrats, Contraline’s CEO and co-founder. Then, the gel is meant to stay in place for years

If this works out it sounds like it might be the best option for male birth control and given the various issues with female birth control, maybe the best option period.

Most small shops still expect you to figure out the shipping back - and they don't pay for the return shipping, which can easily cause the expense of the return to cost more than the item.

My wife has a small retail business that also does online sales. Her written policy is that the customer pays return shipping but in reality she handles things on a case by case basis. At Amazon's scale they can't do that.

What my wife has done (and I'm sure other small businesses do as well) is write her policy to deal with the worst customers.

As an example we had a few people buying items in different sizes (sometimes the same item, sometimes different) and then return the sizes that don't fit. Ya, we're not paying return shipping on that, but if you say "hey I normally fit a medium but this fit really different" then sure.

The drone isn't directly taking electricity from my understanding. It seems like inductive charging.

Saying that is like saying my house isn't taking power directly from the high voltage lines because there's a transformer between the two (transformers function the same way). Sure its technically correct but that inductive charging will put a (tiny) load on the power lines; this isn't a free lunch.

Ooff... Internal policy sounds like a bad plan and reactive messaging (I'm assuming chatting with customers?) sounds even worse.

To be clear, I wouldn't us anything that it created as is. I would check it over and make changes. ChatGPT is solid at roughing things in. The business use case should be saving time in that step, not for it to produce the final product. In my example of grievances I wouldn't just send out whatever ChatGPT puked out...
