Consider Phlebas (the first Culture Series book). I really loved the world, and the world-building, and all the neat scifi details. I just got so dang bored by brooding special boi MC and all his brooding thoughts.

Are the rest in the series noticeably different? I know Culture is a widely respected Scifi series, and I really liked the non-MC side-vignettes and general vibe, but being chained to the narrative following this bloke killed my momentum. If the following books let go of the need for the narrative focus I could see enjoying

Consider Phlebas is known for being the oddball of the series. I'm not a huge player of games guy, but Use of Weapons is great and all of the rest are also great in their own way. I would not do Inversions until you have read a few though. Matter, Surface Detail, Look to Windward, Hydrogen Sonata, all fantastic.

At minimum it is SUPER different - there's two total POVs through 33%, and they're basically one small group in a ship, and another small group in a ship following them. I really hope we're setting the stage for something bigger. The quest given to the MC seems to be absolutely massive but the story is incredibly small.

What is interesting is how this whole series is often recommended. There has to be more with this book!

On Audio, Endymion which is book 3 of Dan Simmons' Hyperion series. I'm about 1/3 through the book and am finding the plotting quite plodding. I can see the big picture though and will carry on, because there's still much to uncover. I'm hoping it takes a turn here soon though.

On physical, Transition by Iain M. Banks. This book reminds me of the TV show Loki - specifically the parts about the TVA. If you have read anything by Iain Banks, I think this is a good mix of his sci-fi with some tame(r) parts of his regular fiction. His regular fiction books are wild. This one is fine. I decided I wanted to hit at least all of IAB's Sci-Fi, and this is one of them.

Hit 1k miles for 2026 (so far) this morning on my run. Not the best year so far for my running but one of the best for consistency. This singular skill I have, the ability to run for hours, is so absolutely useless for daily life that it almost offends me. HOWEVER, it has always helped immensely for brain purposes.

Audiobook journey through the Revelation Space books by Alastair Reynolds. I'm on the third book of the original trilogy and have one book left with a few short stories as well. It's been a good sci-fi space journey so far but I feel like there's tons of missed opportunities. He set up a very interesting world, at minimum.

Physically reading through Look to Windward by Iain M. Banks. Seems like a different Culture book so far...but then again most of them are quite different!

I've been playing through Golf Story on the Switch for a few weeks now. I think it's a brilliant little game that mixes a classic console golf game with a little linear RPG built in. I'm getting old and think it is nice to know how to complete a task, which thankfully in this game I am usually able to figure things out relatively quickly.

I can see the end coming and I'll be sad to beat it, I think. Next up is A Short Hike in yet another attempt to piss off my young son by playing a game that could be much older than him.

I would call this the pinnacle of "old person and young person" gaming. There's an immortal side character that plays a pivotal role in many, many of the puzzles. My 8 year old blows me away with his Odyssey skills and I think some of that type of gaming experience can really help power their skills in these slightly top down puzzle games.

I still kept a guide handy though, there's some obscure crap in that game for an old guy.

We've been playing Super Smash Bros for the Switch lately as well because I have to have him be competitive with his friends someday! Also, slightly different, but he played through both of the Mario + Rabbids games without much of my help except on the biggest of big bosses. Still working on that deep strategy brain...

I haven't been able to totally gather how old you are, but let's just say it doesn't matter. Assuming you're in your mid thirties with the child care comments, I think you should take a step back and analyze your approach to hobbies. I have friends that fly drones competitively, play DnD, collect books, run 100+ mile races in the mountains, and play the ukelele. This is just a few of the hobbies. When they are NEW hobbies especially, each friend is very talkative about these and I really enjoy learning about what they are passionate about.

Empathy is what your goal should be. She has a somewhat new hobby that could culminate (for her) with a half marathon. This is your wife we're talking about, the person you should support the most out of anyone.

Arrogance and your "great self esteem and plenty of personal achievements" are very clear, you had no need to write that sentence.
