I've had the same thing with GDrive. A few years ago now I was looking for where I put some cool NASA pictures of Jupiter.

So I searched Jupiter, mainly hoping for a folder I had lost that had the name with it. I did, and found the pictures I wanted. Cool story bro, right?

What also poped up when I searched my GDrive for "Jupiter" was a picture of a statue of Jupiter from some museum somewhere I took years ago. No name tag on the statue, no direct data tag from my Android phone (yes EXTIF, but that should only put me roughly in a multi-floor museum - the file was from an unorganized SD card dump).

I was pretty shocked. Not that it could identify the statue, but more that it did from inside my "private" GDrive.

I haven't been back to reddit since the blackout for obvious reasons.

I see articles here and kbin pretty regularly saying "everything is fine, we're fine, we don't need or want you, you change nothing" - and at the same time shit seems to be on fire.

Sounds like these protests are reaching an uncomfortable amount of pressure for Reddit HQ.

Hey apologies if this has been said before - but I have an idea for the tags vs ~ system.

What if there was a fluctuating rotation of ~AAA.BBB groups?

What I mean is take the top number of tags in a group and turn that into an official subgroup.

    (thinking in the past here)
~tv: A new season of Game of Thrones/LOST/whatever drops and the posts blow up. Say the LOST tag becomes 15% of the ~tv group tags, or is in the top 5 tags for ~tv. ~tv.LOST is created and is home to all of them. Now it's the future, LOST ended and the posts died down, but The Last of Us season 2 dropped. ~tv.LOST drops off and ~tv.TLOU replaces it as one of the 5 trending tags.

I know the idea is for things to not get too subdivided, but equally they should contain a massive blow up in a group from taking over everything.

Not everything will have a constant rotation like TV shows. ~Music might have a consistent tag of ~Music.New where people week after week talk about the latest albums, In sports NBA/NFL/NHL might have a consistent following on and off season. News would also be a good example: War in Ukraine would be trending for a while, Debt Ceiling, Trump court battles, Reddit Blackout would all come and go.

I guess part of what I mean is with a rolling system of top (or trending) tags, I don't make up some niche thing that it turns out no one cares about but it's forever on the list. But say I do start posting about something and a significant part of Tildes joins in, then that gets added to the list and maybe replaces something that has died out.

The real question is what happens after the "temporary" blackout ends tomorrow (14th). If enough subs stay dark I think things have a chance of actually moving.

Aside from all the general content provided by the big front page of /all -

    • all the jobs/resume/antiwork stuff
    • all of the dedicated music/band/festivals/tvshow subs
    • all of the subs dedicated to a company, software, or product that I use or might need help with

That's what I miss and will miss the most. Generic videos I'll find on youtube, memes on imgur or whatever, askreddit/text subs may as well be this.

It's such a shame because we all had something really good going there for a long time.

I'm willing to bet it will go the route of twitter. Reddit will carry on but just as a shell of its former self. No longer trusted or being used as a news source. Also like twitter there isn't a direct option for everyone leaving reddit to go to (tildes, kbin, etc.)

It might just be my narrow point of view, but it's interesting to see the internet so unstable right now - facebook has lost its golden shine, twitter is out, reddit is going, I'm not about to install ticktock, and "AI" is on a path to change everything.

I haven't been there currently but I bet the smaller pool might even provide a better user experience? It's weird because that's not what we all wanted but there's absolutely a sweet spot of enough going on to keep you entertained, but not too big that you can't have a voice.

It's too late to fix, but not going to destroy the earth just yet. Nothing will change until the boomers die off, and all the people trying to fix it now are kinda crazy. So why don't we just tune it out to static and worry about surviving the decade with work, rent, food, and subscriptions bleeding us dry.

I'm not saying thats my opinion, but it feels like that's what society is doing.

I want a tree here! click click click, now I have 3 trees and everything looks kinda janky and the exact same. Now something amazing could be "created" by just describing it. I really do think the next 10 years will be mind bending for how we use computing power.

and then space - 3D printed rockets, private space companies going into orbit (or almost orbit), moon base?, MARS BASE?!
all of the above yes please.

Part of it for me is Reddit had all of those other resources I used to visit individually all in one place.

Popular Youtube videos worth a watch --> r-/videos
Movie news (slashfilm, collider, random magazines) --> r-/movies
    Any bands I followed on Facebook, mailing lists --> r-/hiphopheads, r-/indieheads, r-/electronicmusic
Any news site --> r-/Worldnews or the like
    etc. etc.

Because I was deleting reddit, I removed Facebook and Instagram off of my phone too. The thing I'm missing the most is that little "hey whats new?" 2 minute pick me up between doing other tasks. I fully understand that this is a void that tildes isn't meant to fill - but I do want to see that picture/gif on NatureIsFuckingLit, that show that someone went to, that painting an art student made...

Anyways I'm sure a break will be good, but I really do hope reddit does pull a 180 - because it will be hard to replace.

Something you printed doesn't fit perfectly? Either change that dimension or just scale the whole print to fix it.

I did that the other day when replacing old drywall anchors. I drew what I thought they should be, then printed the 95% and 105% versions as well. It took a minute but I got the fit I was after.
