I haven't gotten very far yet though so I can't comment much.
Most recently I've finished:
- Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, which is a biting commentary on our current global predicament. Short but difficult to get through due to the sheer weight of the subject matter.
- Mental by Jaime Lowe, about a bipolar woman's past manic experiences and her recent lithium pilgrimage. I'm bipolar myself, and her writing really resonated with me.
- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, which I should have read sooner. Her world-building is immaculate and terrifying, especially given the state of things in reality.

I'm gonna throw in another vote for The Interrupters while I'm here though - I've had them on repeat the past two weeks.
The Falcon (and for that matter, The Lawrence Arms - I just like Chicago bands)
LeKTron (a new Matt Skiba side project)
Days and Daze (folk-punk flavored)
Dead to Me (very fun with a dash of emo)I'll pop back in if I think of anyone else

Moving always triggers this for me now so every time my life is upheaved I’ll usually end up burying myself in the same old thing again.
In this same vein: that whole era of transparent tech is very nostalgic. Beige computers do it for me too, but not quite to the same level, as these transparent ones were something to envy. Same goes for the candy-colored Macs that lived in the computer lab, reserved for Kid Pix and a handful of games (what was that bug one called? or the dinosaur one?)
Roller blading. Going to thrift stores and getting bagels afterward. Any anime that was on Toonami. Geocities. Furbys and Garfield and the Taco Bell chihuahua. Those little Taco Bell nachos. Watching South Park with my mom when I should be sleeping. Daniel Radcliffe’s existence.
So many things, and they are all tied to being 8 years old again. Probably something to explore there next time I’m able to do therapy but for now? I’ll just try to enjoy it.

There are so many tough stains/spots that I’ve just obliterated with one of these trying to de-bachelorify my fiancé’s place. I credit knockoff Mr. Clean almost entirely for how spotless I’ve gotten the bathroom.

I used to be a coffee and toast or bagel kind of gal but my life got upheaved in the past few months and I’ve had to adjust. Perhaps I’ll go back at some point but for now this works.

I’ll totally be adding those to my list - they’re not at my library (figures) but the local bookshop should be able to order them for me once I have the extra coin. Mucho appreciado for the recommendations!

Hell, comedy is what gets me through shit a large portion of the time (it’s the best way to confront a lot of things imo) and lately there’s just nothing funny coming out because it’s all workshopped to try to appeal to everyone.

The art style is incredible gorgeous (I’m kind of a medieval art/history nerd) and I’ve been in and out of the print industry for years so that part of the game really spoke to me as well. Just overall masterfully done. I’ll probably play it again sometime soon to be honest.

They’re what got me into webcomics in the first place as well as inspired me to check out Dragon Quest, and the pixel art meets Disenchantment/Futurama humor is still right up my alley. There are a couple instances where things didn’t age particularly well but hey, that’s true for all media.
It’s not a comic I ever see mentioned but I remember it being hyped up back in the day and I don’t think it deserves to be forgotten especially given the influence it had over me. I still go back and read it every some-odd years.

Maybe this would have been more of a hit with me if I were still a preteen/teenage girl, but at this point in my life I despise the sort of prose used and the way she spun the characters.
I’ve always been a sucker for Greek myth and I’m stoked about this whole feminist retelling trend but I made a mistake starting on this one. It really soured it for me and makes me afraid that everything else I pick up is going to be a very “woe is me, I’m so different and nobody likes me but me being different makes me powerful” story that I feel ought to be aimed at 12-year-olds and not grown women.

I’ve always been drawn to it as a means of self-expression, and as soon as my mom started letting me pick out my own clothes, my fate was sealed.
I’ve been especially focused on it lately as I just had my “30s crisis” and realized I couldn’t get away with certain things anymore (at least in certain combinations) without getting mistaken for a teenager and all that implies, as I’m very petite which makes me look super young. Many things have been rotated out of my closet or just repurposed so they need replaced.
It’s a lot of stalking thrift stores, eBay, my preferred brands for sales, etc. I’m not spending as much money it as many people, sure, but it’s way more energy than I’d like to spend on straight up buying shit for any hobby.

I have to say I really (really!) wish they had stayed more true to the illustration style, but I may have to give this a watch anyway for nostalgia’s sake.

First is the Noumena series by Lindsay Ellis (Axiom’s End and Truth of the Divine). I’m both a lifelong science fiction nerd and someone who has a deep-rooted nostalgia for the mid-late aughts so it resonated with me immediately, but it keeps resonating even after having finished it for a while.
I really, really enjoyed her spin on first contact, the sort of main characters she chose to use and in the second book especially, her masterful depiction of trauma.
Second is Jennette McCurdy’s “I’m Glad my Mom Died.” I’m someone with a… complicated relationship to my own mother, and though she didn’t put me through nearly the hell that Jennette’s mom did, there were a lot of parallels.
What hit me specifically was the second half of the book chronicling her recovery. It focused a lot on eating disorder recovery, which I’m currently struggling with, and it made me feel so much less alone and like it was something I could tackle too.
My fiancé picked up minidisc players for both of us this past week, so we've been burning our mp3 collections onto those and I've been listening to Streetlight Manifesto, Billy Idol, and L'arc~en~Ciel mainly while I'm working. Beastie Boys are next.
