My computer right now is a MacBook Pro:

    • i9 9900hk
    • 32 GB of ram
    • 1TB HDD
    • Vega Pro 20 with 4GB of HBM2

However, I've been designing a Small Form Factor PC case, so I can build a small, aesthetic gaming PC in order to run windows when Apple Switches to their ARM chips.

App Stores are absolutely premium space, but I find it funny that Apple catches flak when Amazon is clearly the most egregious of this type of thing, taking 65% of revenue from published books. It’s insane.

App Store and Steam take 30%. Apple takes 15% after year 1 for a subscription. Epic Games takes 15%... I think more app stores are trending toward 15% or so.

Also, interestingly the DOJ ruled against Apple and in favor of Amazon, basically handing them a monopoly on ebooks.

The DoJ tends to care more about keeping prices low, than actually breaking up monopolies... which is why Amazon now basically controls online publishing.

Truth is that we all drop Breadcrumbs over time, and enough of those can be connected To one another and used to find us.

I’d rather not willingly drop breadcrumbs if I can avoid it. There are definitely two sides of my online presence — then anonymous and non-anonymous side, so I’m not really that crazy about privacy, I do use my name in social media and such. But I would just like to keep the two sides separate.

The best UI / UX for older people is actually iPad OS right now.

    • yes, there are hidden options and menus, but many of them are unnecessary for basic users. And everything a basic user needs is going to be on the surface, but advanced users may go as far as connecting a keyboard or mouse and stylus, becuase they’re all Accessories that extend the capability of a touch first device, not a requirement (this is the main drawback of the Surface by the way).

Yes, MacOS is difficult and abstract, when compared to a smartphone. But of the available desktop interfaces it’s quite easily the simplest desktop UI and UX that’s fully featured (not a glorified browser like Chrome OS).

But every grandparent or old relative that I’ve been able to open up the delight of technology toward, has enjoyed the iPad because it made accessing email, internet, and video calls much much easier.

It’s also much harder to somehow break or compromise an iPad with unwarranted / unwanted software.

    1. Frontline Healthcare Workers (including access to remote counseling)
    2. People who are grieving a loss due to COVID-19
    3. People who need mental health resources during isolation

My content creation project (MultitalentFM) teamed up with Astra Labs (a youth-run 503c) to make this happen. From Pitch >> Launch was 1 week. Including myself, 6 people in 4 time zones worked on this day and night to get it together in time for launch.

We're going to be doing more in the coming weeks... stay tuned, stay safe, stay indoors <3

Yeah. Here's a visual representation of that data in the paper:

Note: Scale at the bottom stops at 25% (for fatalities and % of total population that fits these demographics). Personally I don't like this as it makes the data more misleading at a glance, so I'm pointing this out before you take a look, but in this case it does make the data easier to read/visualize.

Yeah, I totally understand. Right now, the CPU time on AV1 lossless encoding is STUPID high, and I'm not sure if there are designs for a hardware encoder yet. I hope it catches on, but we're in the early days for sure. Right now the two best codecs (that are actually out and in use) are HEVC and VP9

Yes, but there isn't much of a point when AV1 isn't ready to go. Those transistors can be put towards other stuff that's more useful right now.

    https://www.texpion.com/2018/07/av1-vs-vp9-vs-avc-h264-vs-hevc-h265-1-lossless.html

See testing done here. Of note, though, even in lossless mode, AV1 is technically lossy (still buggy and in development). That was as of version 1.0.0-21-g96ee0eb45 (summer 2018). Updated versions should be fixed now, but obviously, performance will be worse than what is shown in those charts right now.

Between the two tests (different source footage) we saw 700MB >> 89MB and 330 MB >> 110MB, so somewhere between 3:1 and 11:1 compression ratios depending on the content of the video.

Just keep in mind it's still buggy and not technically lossless due to some bugs that weren't worked out last summer.
