I'm a lot happier when I can consider a fixed-sum cost analysis of something than I am with something that asks for my card information and that might go up at any time.
My favorites are ones that combine subscriptions with one-time payments in a clever non-annoying way. Intellij does this with perpetual fallback licenses iirc; 365 days of a subscription would get you a permanent license of a fixed version.
A game I played did as well (it had microtransactions, but if your microtransactions ever added up to around the cost of a typical game at the time, you'd subsequently be unable to pay further and would instead be able to generate more of the in-game currency for free.) Bought it on the spot as I was happy to pay the cost of a full game (even though it was a pretty simple game!) to essentially "disable" the microtransaction aspect.
I'm not totally against subscriptions (as dfx points out, they're occasionally entirely justified), though I do know that for me they have a higher psychological threshold to meet/justify, such as paying a share for upstream resources or support. But insofar as there's a "fair" price point for any given thing, I'm more happy to trust (or at least consider) apps or services that provide transparency and choices there.

Seriously though, I have hopes for something wiki-like (even if that's not the direction he's going for a forum) as there are insights to be gleaned both with searching modern forums (searching "site:whatever.com yourQueryHere") as well as platforms like slack ("Searchable Log...") with the potential benefits to forums that are designed with thought put into how they can also act as information archives/repos.

If anything, "closed subs causing site issues" would give them more of a justification to do so.

Something like that would've been useful back in the day (my roommates and I ended up making little Autohotkey scripts) but considering my affinity for sound drops I'm sure I'll be curious about it again at some point!

Who doesn't like a shortcut?
Completely agreed; show me a repetitive task and I'll show you a way to make it easier, particularly involving browsers.
I was excited to learn that Chrome's devtools now has the ability to record and export Puppeteer scripts natively (Devtools' tri-dot menu > More Tools > Recorder). It helped me convince a colleague to look into automating some of his occasionally repetitive work.

I don't blame you. Reddit's voting system incentivizes low-effort content and herd mentalities, to an insane degree. I think we all saw that trend in our own contributions (I have my archived ones saved but towards the end I became a heavy lurker, with my usual thoughts going into a notes app) and that shift in incentives.
Site designers don't take into account the cultural butterfly effects of seemingly-simple design choices, and I'm definitely hoping some forum engine/site learns to do so "for good", whether it's here or elsewhere.

Personally I'm hoping the web trends a bit back towards the way it was before, with smaller fora with their own personalities to discover.
While I agree that it's easier to 'cut loose' in places where not everyone's holding themselves to some standard, this past decade or so has had me starving for civilized places where people either hold themselves accountable for their conduct or it's done for them.
I'm happily willing to put the marginal effort forward myself in finding and contributing positively to "more serious discussions" as you call them, to not have to continue wading through the alternative.

I'm wholly on board with some site attempting to stem those trends, though I'm sure it'd be unpopular or seen as overly strict to many 'casual passerby' users.

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur but their identity systems seem like an inconvenient mess to deal with, and don't really offer enough pros to outweigh the cons.
My contributions to this topic would both be PS2 series that both 'technically' had sequels but that... deviated heavily from the formula. Jak and Daxter (I'm one of the weirdos who loved Combat Racing but I was looking over 'lost frontier' and by god it didn't seem like a J&D game) and Mercenaries (had a Mercs 2 but the PS2 version was so disgustingly watered down I doubt I'll try it on other platforms if I get a next gen console... Plus they made Peng take a complete 180 and everything fun about the first game was like a caricature of itself... oof)
Then again I've missed out on a lot of gaming; taking notes in this thread on beloved titles to play :)
Honestly the 'platform' I'm likely to build or get next will probably be a dedicated thing to play old flash games haha.
