I found season 2 especially uncomfortable to watch. I'm not even sure I want any more after how season 2 felt to watch. It almost felt like the whole plot was revolving around CSA.

I read the manga and enjoy the world-building and creature design, but I'm always so wary of actually recommending it due to the character design. Everyone looks like toddlers, even some of the adults, which admittedly adds to the horrifying aspects of what happens. Hell, I didn't even notice Prushka had breasts until I saw her anime design.
It also makes some scenes even MORE uncomfortable, like the main character asking another toddler-looking character about her... er, biology, since said character is not human. Or the cross-dressing boy who's implied to dress like a maid because he's ordered to. Or the many scenes with them tied up. And pretty sure there's a lot of topless shots.
The creature design is still spectacular and super creative though. And the world building is so fascinating. It's a really messed up and unique setting, terrific in both senses of the word. But... The toddler-esque designs are so uncomfortable sometimes...

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, and I'm probably biased because I absolutely fucking love Made in Abyss, but the designs making it really uncomfortable really drives home why the world building is so great. It's one of the few series that really drives home that this is a fantasy world, with not only fantasy physics, or reality, but completely alien moral systems to our own. It's why arguably, Bondrewd is a moral character in the world of MiA. Even with the other white whistles, almost all of whom are questionable by our standards, with many basically being living Gods and revered as such. Made in Abyss is like an even more extreme version of Greek mythology, with even more fucked up happenings (from our moral perspective). To me it makes it exceptionally fascinating. I get that not everyone is going to be able to stomach it, but I'm glad it exists.
And for the record, in case people are seriously underestimating the discomfort here: I am 99% sure that the author specifically is into both children being tortured or abused, as well as really a lot of peeing themselves. This comes through in the story. I don't think that makes the story bad, if anything I would have been shocked if any author could write Made in Abyss the way it is without having a specific kink it was in service of. It reminds me of how people praise Kobayashi Dragon maid, and then will make a comment like "yeah but the straight shots part is really disconcerting" and it's like yeah, it is, but that's the author's fetish lol, he has another series that's just straight up straight shota(""of legal age but drawn ya know""). Sometimes the good parts come with the authors weird proclivities, I can live with that, personally.
Anyways, Made in Abyss is amazing, and I have been impressed consistently with both the creativity of the world building and the consistency with which the world's moral systems exist, really excited for more of the manga to be adapted.
Strong agree, I am convinced the creator is a pedophile. Collapsible because I’m going to be graphic I am pretty sure Mitty character design was phallic intentionally to make it look like a penis...

I am pretty sure Mitty character design was phallic intentionally to make it look like a penis on top of the children. There is no other reason to design her like that. They could have made her disfigured without making her head resemble the tip of a penis.
First movie in the series (Mezameru Shinpi) to release in 2026. I was a big fan of season 1 and thought the interconnecting movie / season 2 were pretty decent too. Hopefully they keep up the quality!

Faster than Hunter x Hunter for sure, I don't think Tsukushi has health issues like Togashi does so it's not that causing the slow release pace. As for current Berserk, it's similar to that, but...

As for current Berserk, it's similar to that, but the Berserk team has also delayed the release dates on some of their chapters so that's inconsistent. I don't think Mars Chronicle followed any kind of release schedule at all, but it's completed at least.

If this is accurate then the upcoming movie will have Tepaste and Cravali, so that's progressing the story rather than just recapping the last season. Maybe Tsukushi's secretly got a bunch of stuff already storyboarded for the movies and it'll come out a bit faster over the next few years?
Only for folks who don't know about this series: the art is intentionally deceptive looking, it's extremely dark, gory, and has a lot of body horror.

I’m fine with the gore really, but the show just seems so sexual for no reason.
glad to know i'm not the only one who got that undertone from it. great anime otherwise

As an anime-only follower of Made in Abyss, how slow are we talking? Berserk post-Miura? Hunter x Hunter? Battle Angel Mars Chronicle?

It might be like the last series of movies where 1 and 2 were a shortened version of season 1 and only 3 was new.
