I love Dresden Files. They're super pulpy and definitely not high-art, but they're really fun reads. My only problem with them is that for some reason the storylines and characters always totally disappear from my mind a few years after reading them. So several times over the last few decades I ended up having to reread the entire series again whenever a new book has come out. :P

Shame that the TV series sucked so damn bad though. I think the books could have made for a genuinely incredible show. :/

p.s. I had no idea Jim Butcher struggled with depression and had almost committed suicide. I'm glad to hear he's doing much better now though.

But again, I saw the show first. I might feel differently otherwise. I know I had a really hard time seeing Murphy as the tiny blonde in the book and not the actress cast for the show.

People like to point toward things like the hockey stick staff, but honestly I liked that as well. Dresden is kind of stuck between two worlds, and I think that's a really clever way of showing that visually

His books mean a lot to other people which for better or worse means he can be an inspiration to others. (The worse part is the sense of obligation to act for others rather than oneself. ) I hope he's able to keep his peace regardless of the books' future

So, yeah, I can definitely see how that, and many of the other outdated tropes from that genre also being included in Dresden Files would irk a lot of people, yourself included. :/

I think that the noir tropes can start from fairly simple archetypes regarding a woman's role in the story, but by the time Harry has a co-ed squad of werewolves working with him, it's time for a characters' gender presentation to not be correlated with how deep their characterization is.

Practically, I can acknowledge that the noir written in the past carried the gender norms of its time, but when noir-themed stories are written in this century a cleaving to the gender norms of a past generation is a choice.

This is one of those times it's inappropriate to go into my annoyances in detail. I've read like 10-12 of Dresden, his entire Roman legion series and one of his steampunk books. It is not the noir tropes. I don't need the series or the author explained or defended to me. I promise. Happy to discuss via DM or a general books post but not in this thread.

Fair enough. I definitely don't want to pressure you into discussing something you don't want to get into, or are uncomfortable with though, so I'll just leave it be.

It's that this is a thread about a man attempting suicide, not a discussion of the books. It's not my comfort, it's time and place.

I'm hoping Butcher being in a better place means he'll be able to find some ways to inject more fun back into the story because Peace Talks/Battle Ground were pretty bleak.
