I really like IFTTT and hope they have success with the monetization but I'm not really fond of apps locking previously free features behind the premium.

There are no promises. Only the lowest price required to keep you from leaving the platform. Free or sub-cost is either an on-boarding method, a ploy to mine your data, or a monopolization strategy.

Any for-profit is not a public service, and should not be treated as one.

IFTTT has introduced a 'pro' plan at a minimum of $1.99USD per month (which is pretty decent for this space.)

Free plans are now limited to 3 custom applets, but pro plans are unlimited. It looks like you can add unlimited existing / community applets.

Much like Zapier, you can now add multiple steps (instead of 'if this then that' it is 'if this then than then that... etc')

I use IFTTT a lot for my HUE lights, posting weather to a spreadsheet, posting RSS feeds to reddit, and more. I'm definitely not a power user, which, in the past has made Zapier's plans not really worth it.

There are ways to self-host this sort of stuff, but I never bothered. For $1.99 per month, this is worth it.

I'm surprised it took them this long to truly monetize the platform.

The main draw of IFTTT for me has always been the custom voice commands for Google Assistant. I have yet to find a good alternative that hits that sweet spot for ease of use and sufficient functionality. While I've not needed it in awhile, I'd say it's worth up to $5 a month for those who need it. Being able to turn on other applets for free still is a pretty nice draw as well...my wife for example never created an applet, only turned on pre-created ones.

Please note that being able to choose your own price is for a limited time only, so if you want the $2 price point, should probably lock in now.

That said, for most other things that IFTTT does, I preferred Home Assistant for the more powerful functionality that works even offline (at your home anyhow). While Home Assistant hasn't quite hit the ease of use that a commercial product has, it has made tremendous strides within the last 2 years. If you can write YAML, the learning curve is quite low.

I think the price is going up to $9.99 after one year.

Makes sense. That's effectively what Humble did when changing model and upping price...let the subscribers lock in lower. I could justify up to $60 annually if I used IFTT to its full potential....

I could justify up to $60 annually if I used IFTT to its full potential. $120 is a much tougher sell.

I've recently started using Huginn, it's been pretty great so far. I've never used ifttt though, so I don't know how it compares. I really like that Huginn is completely open source. I don't think I'd be willing to invest time in a platform that might suddenly become expensive or even disappear entirely.

Addendum to this story - I just received an email explaining that I could lock in a price that I'm willing to play for IFTTT pro now, and they'll honour it in perpetuity. I bought at $2USD per month.

Oh man! I just saw this. This is great news! IFTTT is definitely worth two bucks a month. Good in them for listening to the community.

After this announcement i stopped using IFTTT and start looking for good alternatives, good self hosted ones like Huggin, Beehive, n8n and Home Assistance for home automation stuff. IFTTT was simple to use with some own made applets but their subscription price is not worth it.
