At least in my area you can from time to time find whole turmeric root.

    Caveat Emptor!

It is great to see testing being done to compare the efficacy of supplements to pharmaceuticals. Effective or not, we need more data to balance out all of the woo hype that abounds in the supplement industry.

Garlic, ginger, and fish oil are all believed with reasonable confidence to reduce inflammation. Examine.com is great for getting a snapshot of research tracking supplements.

Joe Pinkstone Food-based approach to health

    Joe Pinkstone

A trial of more than 150 people who struggle with indigestion found that omeprazole, a drug prescribed by the NHS, produced as good a response as turmeric tablets.

Curcumin, a natural and active compound found in the spice, was found to have a better impact on some excess acid symptoms than the NHS drug, but omeprazole was best for reducing pain.

The natural supplement, delivered as two 250mg curcumin tablets four times a day, “had comparable efficacy” to the drug, the scientists wrote in the paper which was published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

Turmeric is derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is used widely in South Asian cuisine, featuring heavily in Thai curries, for example.

Curcumin has long been claimed to have antimicrobial and antiinflammatory properties and the study investigated how it may help treat excess stomach acid.

    Food-based approach to health

The study is thought to be the first head-to-head comparison of conventional pharmaceuticals compared to the natural alternative famed in Asia.

Dr Pongpirul said that “we encourage a food-based approach rather than medicine or supplement approach” and believes people with indigestion should include the spice into their diet to help their symptoms.

“Individuals with indigestion issues may find benefit from including turmeric in their diet, but they should also pay attention to how their bodies respond to it, as it may not be beneficial for everyone,” he said.

In the paper, the scientists said the trial provides reliable evidence that functional dyspepsia can be treated with turmeric and that “the findings from our study may justify considering curcumin in clinical practice”.

“In the context of a food-based approach to managing indigestion issues, using turmeric as a spice in cooking can be a part of a broader strategy to manage symptoms,” Dr Pongpirul added.

“Including a variety of spices and herbs in the food can not only enhance the flavour of your meals but also offer potential health benefits.”

If you are on a PPP (proton pump inhibitor) stop. You can't do that forever.

I like the spirit of this post, but probably better to say something like "work with your doctor to see if you can create a long-term plan to wean off."

Correct! I just hear about way to many people on these forever/indefinitely which is not a viable treatment path for stomach issues, if they're even appropriately prescribed in the first place.
