Picture 2, absolutely. A variety of colors, the plate is more interesting, and the side dish with the egg looks very promising. Item one feels too big for its bowl, like I'd have to be very careful starting to eat to avoid things going over the edge, and while there's a variety of items, it's comparatively monochromatic as compared to 2.

Hi Tildes! I've got here two noodle dishes I made a while apart, and I was wondering if my skills are actually improving. I'd like some feedback on which one looks better/presents better. Thanks!

Both look delicious! Regarding presentation, I like the second one better. First one is also nice, but the meat (?) could be sliced to look a bit better and the seaweed may be standing on the side to not get soggy so quick while you're eating. Like this random photo I found https://i.pinimg.com/736x/d8/65/b2/d865b2cfd2be0610b46d1011989d6e4e.jpg

Thanks for the feedback! I, too, have no love lost for soggy seaweed (unless, yknow, it's in the sea still).

like gil said, slicing the meat would also be nice since that would make for an awkward bite.

I’d go with pic 2, mostly because that looks like a really good egg.

Thanks for the feedback! I think the major flaw with the egg is that I opted to cook it more than poach it, mostly because it was two days expired! Such is the nature of cooking, however.

I personally like it cooked, as you did, better than poached. Just better if it had been marinated for a while (ajitama), but I never plan with enough time for that.

I'm generally more of a rice and chicken or pork guy, but for noodles I like the thinner variety.

Presentation is a whole other skill from cooking delicious food :) for example, in advertising they add incense smoke to boost the "heat steam" factor, use shaving gel instead of cream, and there's usually an inverted bowl under a dish to prop things up. Lighting is probably 50% of a good food photo.

I prefer pic 2 for the white bowls on dark background, the arrangement of egg with sesame seeds, and overall colour composition.

Agree with slicing the meat and propping up the seaweed. You can also add accent colours with a Naruto (swirl fish cake) or a pickled plum. Be stingy with the toppings just for the sake of the picture: eg, three slices of meat only, or try separating the chives and have them be their own little ingredient island, pretend you're doing a charcuterie board style presentation. Like how you put the hot sauce on the side in pic 2. Take a quick pic then add all the extra topping quantity back in to eat.

    Sample professional ramen pic:

Your egg and its presentation blows theirs right clear out of the water though. *Chef's kiss

Pic 2 looks better as far as presentation goes. However, pic 1 looks like it might taste better or interesting.
