Silliness aside, I'm a big fan of both the impossible burger and the beyond burger, and I'm happy that they're becoming more prevalent in Canada. I don't disagree with their taste assessment, but I personally put the impossible and beyond burgers on the same level; they're in the uncanny valley of meatlike experiences. I enjoy them both; I think I might slightly favour beyond over impossible, but that could be because I've had the beyond burger most at a great place called "The Works" which did a great job with it.

They've got texture down pretty well, but taste is obviously... weird. To be honest, I don't quite understand this need to immitate meat when a plain vegetable bun would be better. Not at immitation, but at taste. And that's what this is about, no?

Honestly, we just need to reduce the amount of meat, specifically beef, that humans consume, because it's fucking up the whole planet. We categorically have failed at encouraging people to make better choices using things like food guides and science; I think it's reasonable to try to allow people to keep the same behaviours but change the result that those behaviours have.

I think that lab grown meat is going to be the way that we actually achieve this, but this step is a really important one on the way to making that a reality. If we can get more omnivores eating this instead of a burger, then it puts money into these more sustainable models.

I say this as a guy whose favourite food is probably burgers; I understand that these choices aren't sustainable and I'm happy to have other options that suit my inability to make better choices.

My sole exposure to meatless patties so far has been the Impossible Whopper at Burger King. I didn't do a side-by-side taste test with a meat menu item, nor did I try the patty on its own, but as a whole burger I thought it was great (and this is coming from a regular meat-eater). I've actually re-ordered it since and feel like it will replace fast-food burgers for me should they keep it on their menu long-term.
