Still haven't gotten around to homemade mayonnaise yet. All in due time I suppose.

If you love the MSG pickle and are planning to make your own mayo soon, you might wanna check out Japanese Mayo. Two key differences from "traditional" mayo -

      1. It uses only egg yolks
      2. Contains MSG + some mustard

It tastes amazing on sandwiches, and if you're making your own, you can sub the mustard for something like garlic or paprika.
I started off with a pack of Kewpie Mayo I got from the store, planning to replicate it at home soon.

That looks very interesting! I'll try to find some Kewpie. As for making it at home I've got most of the ingredients, so that'll be happening in the near future. Thanks for introducing me to a new...

There's a chain of restaurants that are only in the state of California - mainly in the extended Los Angeles megalopolis - called Urban Spoon that I went to the first time yesterday for lunch. And it was so good that I actually went back there today for dinner. In fact, on that first day while I was in line to order the person in front of me raved about the food and told me that she ate there regularly.

There's this odd conception of a 'California cuisine' - that we all eat this super fresh food that comes straight from the farm and focuses on seasonality. That's pretty obviously not true if you've ever actually visited the state - we eat the same garbage as everyone else does. If you're eating like that, you're probably at a fine dining restaurant. Urban plates actually does offer food like this, but without the fine dining aspect; they're going for the fast casual market.

The food is conceptually simple; the biggest thing they offer is their "plates", which is some sort of protein combined with two sides and a piece of bread. The sides are where they really shine, though; they offer all the things that you'd expect; potatoes, either braised or mashed; salads, rice, etc. But they also offer things like cauliflower rice, macaroni and cheese, quinoa, fresh fruit, and even a beet salad with goat cheese. It really doesn't matter what you choose because everything is just so good.

And even though their offerings are extremely high quality, they are actually fairly inexpensive. They've got a pretty good "value" selection of meals for $10, and that's about what fast food is starting to get to right now; if you want to get a good steak dinner, most options are under $15.

Found an excellent decaf bean from a local coffee roaster, and I’m in love. No more store brand coffee for this gal!

Consider me jealous! I've got a local roastery, and they're okay but nothing to write home about imo. My favorite one is 30+ miles away, so I gotta remember to stock up every time I visit family...

Sure! In order of most to least used. The Scoop is definitely my go-to.

            • A standard French press that makes a little over two servings for my partner and I on the weekends.
            • A 3-cup Bialetti moka pot that I use when I want to make two shots of espresso. Also good for camping.
            • Nanopresso, for single-serve espresso. Occasionally used while camping solo.
            • A silicone drip brewer for when I'm camping by bike.

I do decaf during the week and occasionally caffeine on the weekends. I was getting regular high heart rate notifications (via my Apple Watch) when I was drinking caffeine daily, not to mention I get pretty jittery and anxious when I drink it that often. When I really need to finish a project at work, I’ll have a cup of caffeinated coffee for extra focus, but that’s maybe once every couple of months.

When I have caffeine, it’s only ever 8-12 ounces of coffee or 1-2 shots of espresso in a latte.

Tried Vitan is a natural herbal drink.

Vitan-1 drink: helps to improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system, has a good effect on the digestive system, improves immunity, removes small doses of radiation.

I understand that you can make something like this yourself. The main condition is to collect herbs in an ecologically clean area. Then brew in moderation, add honey to taste, cool and done. I think it is much healthier than many carbonated drinks and delicious.

I made gnocchi with a pesto cashew cream sauce that turned out fantastic. I had previously made a plant-based pesto using fresh basil, olive oil, cashews instead of pine nuts, and nutritional yeast. For the cream sauce I blended up some raw cashews with boiling water, and added some fresh garlic, miso paste, salt, a bunch of the aforementioned pesto, and some more nutritional yeast. Tossed the cooked gnocchi with the sauce and then added some roasted asparagus on top. It was one of those meals where I tried to get creative with a bunch of stuff in my fridge and pantry, and it turned out super delicious.

It's actually really good. It's not 16+ hours on a smoker good, but its pretty damn good for a 2 hour weeknight endeavor.

I'm a big fan of fennel/cinnamon or Chinese 5 spice rubs in general with beef and I think it's really good here but you can always go with something a bit more traditional as well.
