Active communities for discussing 40k?

I’m slowly getting into warhammer 40k but feel pretty disconnected from the broader 40K universe.

Are there any active communities where people discuss 40K? Discussion about new models, balancing, rule changes, painting show cases, etc.

Right now I’m just painting alone listening to PoorHammer on YouTube 😅.

Possibly a bit controversial as it has to do with ai. But I've been watching a YouTube channel about 40k lore but with the voice of David Attenborough. It's surprisingly good, decently long videos...

These are fun! I'd recommend PancreasNoWork too for basic lore videos too.

I've actually subscribed to a couple of communities on Facebook just to get a fix, but it's not the same.

I've read several of the Horus Heresy books but I've never been sure where to start with 40k.

Some are better than others but I'd definitely recommend anything from Dan Abnett or ADB. I particularity enjoyed Legion.

The Eisenhorn series (also by Dan Abnett) is also awesome 40k pulpy fun. The audiobooks are really good too.

You'll always find updates on Warhammer-community.com, so that's a nice way to keep up. If there's a big balance change, you can bet you'll find decent discussion over on the 40k subreddit, as well as the faction specific subreddits if the change is affecting that faction.

Dakkadakka.com also has forums for discussion, plenty of 40k, but also wargames in general if you're interested in broadening your horizons (always recommended. There's some fantastic wargames out there.)

Lastly, the Auspex Tactics channel on YouTube has good rules analysis. Very meta focused if you're into it, but even if you only mildly pay attention to the meta (as myself), it's a good resource to keep up with what's generally happening with the game.

Dakkadakka looks good! I’ve seen the Auspex Tactics channel but I feel a little overwhelmed watching, at least for where I’m at with the game.

Oh yeah, I'm a pretty casual player. I do like to know what's strong in my own army, so I'll usually watch his videos that are specifically about my armies or if it's a big video, just skip to the parts that pertain to both my armies and skip the rest. I'm barely going to remember my own rules and tactics, let alone for two dozen other armies.

I'd like to have an active community for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but it's even more niche than 40k.

I'm also getting into Warhammer and unfortunately the best place still seems to be reddit as far as I can tell. There is a discord linked in the 40k sub so that could be an option if you want to avoid using reddit.

Lemmy has a small community but it doesn't seem very active, but that can always change with time.

If you want something in person check any local game shops you have nearby for a Warhammer night and you might find other newbies, especially with the new edition.

Another option might be facebook, I'm not personally on there but there's probably some communities.

There's also an inordinate amount of lore and rule lawyers on Reddit for 40k. I was there for a long time and those folks float around in conversational threads arguing and bickering with anyone who doesn't share their view of lore or rules... It is exhausting when you encounter one.

So the sub becomes very image focused with the same rote advise about thinning paints and "give that man a successor chapter" memes for a great paint job. Which is funny the first time, but not 70924th.

Grimdank is actually probably better in someways... They're hugely distracting, but they force you into the wikia space and they do not take themselves too seriously. They're there for a laugh.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/ was just for orks but used to have lots of general discussion.
https://thetyranidhive.proboards.com/ for Tyranids, though it's pretty slow these days.
    http://www.advancedtautactica.com/index.php for Tau.

Unfortunately reddit has most of the 40k online userbase it seems. Lots of youtube channels seem to have pretty active comments but it's not the same.

Feel free to make posts about it here! Seems like we have a decent amount of users who are into it. :) I've been playing on and off for about 20 years.

Lemmy.world has a decently active 40k dedicated community, it's not as populated as eg reddit but there's a good handful of posts each day with interaction, and plenty of people showing off paintjobs

Not that Facebook is all that great, but I primarily use it for the value of the groups and marketplace. I don't think I've made a profile post in a year or more now.
