Any Factorio players here?
Just wondering if anyone else around here plays Factorio. I got it a few weeks ago and am having a wonderful time of wasting hours upon hours building massive spaghetti factories :)
I'd swear that I'm not completely addicted but that would be a lie.
I've played a lot in the past, but not so much at the moment. I was always really interested in the train system and making scalable solutions using them and belts. Blueprints are inspired, and I just really like how involved the devs are.
Unfortunately I never quite got to the megabase scale, or even got the final green circuit production achievement (though I had a world or two designed just for making green circuits...) Are there any particular goals you like aiming for? Do you play with mods?
I have yet to try mods, as I'm still working my way through my first full game. So far I've gotten up to around construction robots, and I think my next few hours of play will be devoted to getting my basic resource and circuit production up to snuff to start building out a big robotic network (mostly because it's getting annoying to have to run around fixing laser turrets myself).
I really wish now that I had gone with a main bus type design, read up on good furnace layouts, and read some of the stuff on good defensive setups...
You're going to love construction and logistics robots. They're want turn the game from a fun logistics belt system to an absolute joy to play. Automatically fixing laser turrets is one benefit, but I usually play with minimal or peaceful enemies. I know they've changed the combat system since I stopped playing though, so maybe it's more engaging now. Logistics bots for self-replenishment and personal construction bots are absolutely my favourite system to set up and have working.
I wouldn't worry too much about having a perfect base though, everyone screws up somewhere. A main bus is nice, but it certainly has its own issues. Spaghetti is just fine as long as you're not aiming for ridiculously high amounts of production. In fact, I think the only things I consistently use that I just Googled are a solar array with a roboport, the standard green circuit block that everyone uses, and a nice flower-shaped red circuit layout. I find it a lot more fun to just struggle on my own designs than plop down other people's.
"I'll just refactor this factory producing engine units" -> ten hours later -> "phew! Now that I've refactored pipe production, gear production, steel beam production, and bolstered the production of iron plates, I can finally refactor engine unit production"
aka biggest time-suck ever. I do love it though, and I have a great time whenever I get the itch to hop back in and spend a few hours touching up factories. I just have a really hard time justifying the amount of time it takes with all of the other things I can/want to be doing.
That was me last night!
3 hours later:
I'm sure I'll hit a point where I can't justify the time eventually, but for now I'm just too wrapped up in how fun it is.
I used to play it a tonne before they had multiplayer figured out, and then again when a bunch of people on discord got into it and started playing co-op, but it's been so long that I barely remember anything about it. I wonder if this means I'll be able to get near that "first experience" again since it's a phenomenal game to discover.
Have you had the joy of spending an entire evening on something only to find that you've got things misaligned by one and now you gotta rebuild it in the right spot otherwise it wont fit?
Absolutely! It happens all the time when I'm setting up new refining/chemical plant areas. I'll plan everything out, spend 15-30+ mins setting it all up, only to realize that the last pipe doesn't fit. Then repeat that 3-4 times before getting it right. I love this game...
You should absolutely try it out again, it's very fun and, from what my friends have said, very different now than it was a while back.
Oil always got me, it took a lot longer to understand than anything else did... I usually make things a lot bigger than they need to be and then compress it until it's as small as I'm comfortable with. There's also some nice simple circuits you can use to automatically balance oil proportions based on comparisons and power switches, though that makes things a lot bigger as well.
It's gonna take me a little while longer to get organized enough to be using control circuits I think, but I know for sure that I'll be really glad when I do finally figure them out.
I played a lot, although on-and-off, between .12 and .15. I'm waiting for the proper release to dive back in.
Hehe... I suspected this post would take off given how many /r/factorio users I seemed to invite over the last week. ;) I adore the game too (haven’t played in a while though) but was honestly surprised just how popular it seems to be amongst all the redditors who asked for invites.
p.s. anyone watching DDRJake’s streams/playthrough of it? He started out terrible but is actually getting pretty good at it now.
I'm kind of interested in Factorio, but I haven't gotten into it for two main reasons:
It is definitely a bit expensive, especially if you're not entirely sure you will love it. If you can ever justify the money, I would absolutely recommend picking the game up though, if me and my friends are anything to judge by, you'll come to love it.
By the way, I love your username. Makes me remember all the great scenes with Daleks and want to go back and rewatch the old seasons...
Heh, thanks. I've not really watched much Doctor Who for a while, tbh. I thought of the username when I saw a post by "SadDalek" as I was trying to think of a username. I tried for HappyDalek and found that one taken, so I went with Confusing, and here we are.
