Dwarf Fortress hype!
Who here plays Dwarf Fortress? It is such an amazing game that I only got back to playing last night after a weeks-long hiatus while focusing on my job.
I prefer playing Adventurer mode with some crafting mods, and exploring the land - socializing, having fun, making NPC pals, and being a hero.
Maybe we can do a Tildes DF succession game!
HELL yes I would play a ~ succession game. I love DF and I've been playing it for a couple of years now on and off, love both Adventure mode and Fortress mode for their differences. Also spent a lot of time on Rimworld and other stuff like it. I'm not actually the best at it or anything but I can at least keep stuff going without having a total meltdown within 30 minutes.
It's been a few years since I've played seriously. Most of my fortresses died from FPS death.
Also, the recent Hawaiian volcanic activity really reminds me of Dwarf Fortress: https://vimeo.com/270909744
I've tried, honestly tried to get up and running with this game but never get further than the most basic levels. I keep coming back every year or so thinking I've somehow become wiser and more determined to play the game but my resolve falters after a few days when I realize, I don't know what is going on.
It's been a while since I last played, I'm overdue for giving it another shot.
You should check out captnduck's latest tutorial series... they got me through my "try, try, try, try again then give up" hump and actually playing the game for real.
Thanks I'll check it out. That was the other problem, couldn't find a tutorial that would ease me in to it.
I tended to use DasTactic's videos tbh, since Captnduck's accent is a bit too thick for my poor American ears.
I think his accent is adorable and he is remarkably relaxing to listen to so it actually motivated me to keep listening. :P
The Starter Pack definitely made sure I had at least a little more than snowball's chance in hell of understanding what was going on. As much as I like the minimalism of a CLI game, the sprites made it a whole lot easier to get a better idea of what the different items in the game were.
I prefer Fortress mode, but I do play Adventure mode from time-to-time. When I do, though, I'm pretty cheaty about it. I'll play Fortress mode for a while and generate tons of steel weapons, armor, etc, then abandon the fortress. Then I'll switch to Adventure mode, walk to the abandoned fortress, and stock up on all the masterwork gear I left behind.
That's not cheating, that's planning and genius! Cheating would be DFHack's createitem command
I'm definitely interested in trying it out sometime! Lately I've been trying to learn Aurora, which I stumbled across after looking around for something deeper than Stellaris. I've read that Aurora can be compared to Dwarf Fortress in terms of depth and complexity so I'm looking forward to seeing what DF has to offer. I had always assumed it was a sort of low-tech implementation of something like Rimworld but now that I have something to compare its reputation to I'm a lot more interested.
