Definitely was excited when I saw the news this morning; Quake 2 is/was a formative game for me. I was 13 when it released and spent countless hours replaying that campaign; not only that, but it was when I first really started playing multiplayer games. I had dabbled in multiplayer with Shareware Quake, but not much more than that. Quake 2 was when I started trying out deathmatch, CTF and ultimately my favorite mods: Weapons Factory and Action Quake 2.
Weapons Factory was just a whole new world to me at the time; being able to select various classes, use grappling hooks and just have full run of asymmetric CTF maps cemented a love of both CTF and asymmetric multiplayer in general.
Action Quake 2 was so cool at the time because it simulated real environments, something that hadn't really been done yet in a full 3d game. I still remember assaulting or defending the Hotel on that one particular map and it seemed so amazing that you could go in just about every room. More importantly, Action Quake 2 encouraged me to take-up the keyboard and the mouse. Prior to this mod, I had been an unabashed keyboard user, first learning using it on Doom, but the inability to aim up or down quickly in Action Quake 2 really showed me that I needed to step up my game. I was a changed Gamer from that point on.
Even more was the soundtrack from Sonic Mayhem; I had liked heavier music prior, really enjoying the midi soundtracks of Doom and finding many "heavier" midi soundtracks via Duke Nukem 3d mods, but hadn't really heard anything "real" until the Quake 2 soundtrack. This again, really cemented my love of heavy music, Metal in particular. I still recall popping the Quake 2 cd into my cd player and listening to it on repeat, when one fateful day, my sisters boyfriend at the time asked me if I had ever heard of Metallica. Long story short, it was all over for me from that point.
Anyway, apologies for the long, effusive post, but Quake 2 was just formative in so many ways for me and I'm looking forward to having some time with this remaster when I have the time.
When I saw the "remastered" part, I thought that that meant they had redone the levels and models to add detail to them. I'm a bit disappointed that this looks more like what you get for free with...
When I saw the "remastered" part, I thought that that meant they had redone the levels and models to add detail to them. I'm a bit disappointed that this looks more like what you get for free with modern source ports, so this is stuff that a lot of the primary audience for this already has.
Don't let me stop you all from having fun, though; I consider this release to be a good thing. The fact that it's free if you already had it on Steam and it comes with extra content is fantastic. I bought the steam version of Quake II a while back and never actually played it in that form. Now I've got it in a super accessible format since I can just hit a button on my steam deck and start playing.

I see a major benefit to these re-releases being their centralization. There are probably 20 Quake source ports (as in major ports, and important forks), for example, and different compatibility groups, some that work with each other, others that don't. Having this means that, at least for a bit, there's a solid experience that is likely to have a critical mass of players. And to be honest it feels a bit better to me than most source ports, at least for Q1, and the Q2 port is miles ahead.
Nightdive continues to be a rare gem in the industry, and I'm glad to support them any time. I feel like it's almost robbery that the old Quake collection that I got on sale for next to nothing...

Hopefully Q3A isn't far off. Lots of fun memories there.

Really liking this. Quake 2 is the only one of the trilogy I hadn't really got into previously, but excited to give the campaign another shot. I've always preferred quake live multiplayer to quake 1, but the deathmatch in this feels more in the vein of 3/live and I'm having a fun time with it. I'm sure server activity will die down quickly but I'm glad it's active for now.

I grew up playing the Quake games. Quake 2 was the only one I didn't play any online multiplayer of, so it's neat finally doing that.

Yeah, how are we going to get AQ2 working with this?

It's included with Xbox gamepass. Been playing it for a half hour or so and it feels great.

Wow, that's awesome, I love how it looks like they kept the old style while still improving it

Well drop my pants and celebrate everything. That's amazing news for a Friday.
