Kinda disappointed that the Splatoon dlc is still so far away.

F-Zero 99 seems fun. It's probably not what people wanted, but it seems like good fun in its own way.

Christ, there's been so much rumormongering and teasing for an F-Zero game on the Switch. I have low (basically zero) expectations, but I want to believe.

Well, there's sort of an F-Zero game on Switch later today now.

Did a google, F-Zero 99 seems neat. Would love something on the scale of F-Zero GX though.

I know little about the upcoming release bar what we saw in the Direct earlier today. I hope they heavily lean into Metroidvania-esque mechanics and give it a proper run out.

For Prince of Persia, the original's platformer gameplay felt like a lot of committing to actions with deliberate inputs and timing being rewarded, against heavy negative consequences. I personally hope there's some room for that older gameplay style and not just copping from other popular Metroidvanias - like those giant slamming pillars being as dangerous as they look.

It's easy to miss the right feel on these games IMO - lot of holistic design that needs to click between freedom of movement and reward/punishment without either losing the player from bad pacing/backtracking or making it feel too easy. Take Metroid Dread; stellar action game with wonderful movement, but it felt like it was way more about parkour than exploration. You could point in pretty much any direction and end up where you wanted to, even if it wasn't intended, but it still felt like the game was worried about you feeling like you were at a dead end on your path and the whole thing felt like a straight, uninterrupted line as a result. I played Super Metroid in the middle of Dread and I immediately got why people decry every other Metroid over the map in that game, even though I still like Zero Mission a bit more... It's really easy to screw up the sauce or make it feel kinda insubstantial. Looking forward to PoP though.

Metroidvanias are my favourite genre, and from what I heard in the trailer, it definitely sounds like they'll go in that direction:

As your journey progresses, Sargon will grow stronger and learn new abilities that expand his arsenal

The combat looks intense; excited to see how it compares to stuff like Hollow Knight, Ori, and Blasphemous.

The price is a little steep but hopefully there's a sale at some point. Thanks for pointing that out! I love a good 2D metroidvania :)

The bulk of this direct was remasters/ports, which is adding fuel to the speculation that the Switch 2 is coming in 2024.

    From Axios:

Why it matters: The absence of news about major, original Switch games is a sign that development of significant, new games for that console from Nintendo is winding down.

Details: During a 40-minute Nintendo Direct showcase today, most of the biggest Switch games revealed were returning classics and games due for a second chance.

    • Another Code Recollection is a Jan. 19 remastered compilation of two mystery games originally released for the Nintendo DS and Wii.
    • Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a Feb. 16 remake of a 2004 Game Boy Advance puzzle game.
    • Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, a remake of a 2013 Nintendo 3DS game, is now slated for a summer 2024 release.
    • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, a beloved role-playing game first offered on the GameCube in 2004, will return as a Switch game in 2024.

As someone who doesn't play RPGs and who has already played Luigi's Mansion 2... I'm looking forward to more info on the Peach game (lol). Mario vs DK and/or the Tomb Raider collection could be interesting as well, depending on the price.

While I still hold out hopes for that Fire Emblem 4 remake, what I'd really like to see, but doubt we will, is Fire Emblem Warriors: Engage. I think it's one of the few Fire Emblem games that basically fits right into the Fire Emblem Warriors series without a whole lot of tweaking. You've got Engage mode for Awakenings, rings for leveling, bonds and supports, and the Tempest Trials for a grinding mode. The only thing that doesn't really transfer well is the story, but they went alternate timeline with Three Hopes, so I suppose that could do that again. Or just redo the current story and make it less bad.

Granted, I'm probably one of the few people that love Dynasty Warrior games and the FE Warriors line in particular, but I don't care about much else Nintendo puts out. I basically only bought the Switch for Fire Emblem games to begin with.
