The development team has some members who were integral in creating those games.
Yesterday, they had the first live esports event ever, hosted by ESL and casted by the greatest casters of all time, Tastosis. They also had some interviews with the team members talking about the development process.
Are people exited for the game, did you watch the showmatch?
Considering the game is in beta, I'm exteremely exited.
While I'm not totally sold on the visuals yet, as the units look a bit rough to me. The gameplay and mechanics do look awesome. It has that Warcraft feel to it while being faster.
Also getting to see a huge flux of content and new stragies for the game once it launches sounds like fun.

Given that they have already released plans for a 3vsAI and co-op story missions I think it looks promising Of course that doesn't quarantee quality, but we'll see

I agree with @mituuz that the units look a little rough, the way the hedgehog car units moved felt very wrong and personally I prefer the straight sci-fi or fantasy settings. Something about fantasy mechs has never done it for me.
The fact it’s built for esports is also a big plus, I’ve been missing watching the high stakes RTS matches and inversely to my FPS skills I think I’m actually improving with age.
Overall super keen to get into it. Between this and Beyond All Reason, two of my three favourite styles of RTS are finally getting some time in the sun. If anyone points me to a C&C spiritual successor I might have to check my pulse. Edit: What’s wrong with me? My fourth fav Homeworld is getting a new release soon as well.
I really want this game to succeed. RTSs (and all my favorite people associated with them) deserve a win. SC2 casts were my comfort food back in the bad old days, and I'd like something like that...

Unfortunately, right now, it doesn't look like a win to me.
The art style (far more important than graphical fidelity) is straight-up uninspiring. Appropriately enough, in a game that is apparently like a hybrid of WC3 and SC2, the art style looks like a hybrid of the WC3 and SC2 art styles. (Actually, rather than WC3, it reminds me more of the two most important games descended from WC3---namely, Dota 2 and League of Legends---but those art styles are also descended from the WC3 art style, so there you go.) But even though SC2 was far more cartoony than SC1, this just isn't working for me---it's too muddled. It feels like it isn't "saying" anything. And that means it won't succeed on social media. It also has the problem that it doesn't make it clear how "important" an event is. Honestly, I kind of wish they had gone more cartoony, but that would have its own problems.
I didn't get a sense of how much importance they're placing on the campaign. I hope it's a lot. GiantGrantGames's informal survey of RTS players suggests that the storyline and campaign are decisively important for most RTS players. This seems counterintuitive at first, but it makes sense on reflection. Most RTS players are casuals. And while Blizzard's storytelling has been . . . questionable, the (apparent) appeal of the WC3 story is a huge reason why WoW was able to exist in the first place. And SC2 ('s first two installments') bar-raising campaign missions may have had a lot to do with their success.
I'm also not sure why they're leaning more heavily on WC3 than StarCraft. Maybe the thought was that both StarCraft games are still elephants in the RTS room, so there would be more room for novel design and mindshare in a more Warcraft-y game. That seems misguided to me. Part of the Warcraft-y design space is already being explored by MOBAs. Also, if you asked a video game-enjoyer to name any RTS other than Starcraft, I think like 50% of them couldn't do it. This means that, for the average video game-enjoyer, "RTS" is basically synonymous with "Starcraft". "New" things can certainly do well, but you need a way to sell them.
This is still a beta, so who knows. But if you go back and watch videos of SC2 in beta, it sure looks basically the same as it did when it released, which suggests that Stormgate at release won't be too different from what we're seeing now.

In the kickstarter video they have highlighted their 4 C's - Campaign, Co-op, Competitive, and Custom Games (very Commendable!). The linked video is focusing on the Competitive side. I'm sure they'll release more substantial Campaign material closer to release.
...Unfortunately though, I'm almost certain the campaign story isn't going to "say" anything either. They want to be flexible enough to have mechs and demons from hell and magic and space lasers. And I think they'll probably want to stay flexible in the story too so that they can go in whatever direction they want for each installment (they have said the campaign will be released over time as microtransactions).

That said, I am definitely ready for more quality RTS games so I'm still hopeful I end up liking Stormgate.
GiantGrantGames has some really good insights on the genre and I enjoy his content. Somehow I've missed this completely, will have to check it out. Looks like RTS as a genre is still in good health.

Definitely worth checking out. I wouldn't say the genre is healthy but it is currently experiencing a resurgence. Let's hope both games are great.
