I played tons of EQ back in 1999 and through to the Luclin expansion where I stopped. Game design just isn't there anymore and I don't see it going back, in spite of the attempts to force it with games like Vanguard and Pantheon. I have neither the time nor the wont to sit at my computer for hours, forming a group, sit at my computer for hours, farming the same spot over and over with said group. I'm guessing here that the targeted audience is people like me, men 35-44, who had that experience as teenagers and frankly I'm not sure there's many of us who want that or have the time for it.
Ultimately, it seems like that's what these newer EQ-esque MMOs want to drag us back to the early days and revel in nostalgia, but none of them seem to have any new ideas about how they could encourage a community and player interaction. It's all the same old, reskinned with the expectation that it'll be successful. The few people that do want that experience are already playing on Project 1999, which has a decent amount of players, but no where near what's needed to sustain a commercial MMO these days.

I’ve seen this before with software startups. One of the ways they can fail is for there to be a creator who is a talented programmer whose main secondary asset is a manic energy and will to build something. I’ve not yet built a company, but what I’ve seen is that unless you’re incredibly lucky those two traits are not enough. You’ll spend hundreds of hours on detours that didn’t need to be explored, all while there are gaping holes in your product that are non-starters to most users.
This is all fine for passion projects that never expect to turn profits and don’t need users to justify their existence. But it’s no way to run a business.
It seems pretty focused on combat. From the FAQ: Oh well! Maybe some other game will take this further than Minecraft.

EverCraft Online is designed to deliver a classic MMO experience. To that end, terraforming and free building is not currently being implemented as a player feature. Down the road we are looking at players placing buildings and other crafted prefabs in the world, but it is not a priority.

I think the name is meant to be a mix of Everquest and World of Warcraft, maybe? That's what my mind jumped to, anyway, as a fan of both MMOs and Minecraft.

Ok I checked it out and it's been really fun so far. However, I also spent the last decade playing classic EQ on an emulated server so this is my kinda thing.

I'm fixing to have some time on my hands for a bit, so I'll probably check it out.
