I spent an hour on this today and it was great coming up with a design and then browsing through everyone else's.
The most creative I saw was one where they took in 3 different ball colors into a pinball area to be mixed up, and then sorted them using fans into the correct outputs, as apparently the different colors have different inertias.

No the one I was talking about is Big Mixer https://imgur.com/Ud5dD53, but the video you posted is a similar concept! Edit: And browsing more today I am seeing a lot more machines using this...

You should have submitted this with a user created tag on it. ;) Nice job, @chromakode. Always fun to see some of the cool projects you helped create pop up on XKCD!

I like it too, nice work! What's the nature of the team that made this, are you employed at xkcd or just frequent collaborators? I bet I'd enjoy contributing some day. Is there a word for the...

I bet I'd enjoy contributing some day. Is there a word for the internet tradition of working hard on something whimsical, if only to spite capitalism? I'm feeling it here in the best way.

This was my 15th annual April fools project with xkcd. The A1s are are typically made as creative collaborations among friends for the fun of it, with Randall, davean, and me focused on creative, backend, and frontend respectively. I usually participate as an adjunct volunteer on interactive comics. We brainstorm ideas together with past collaborators. Since we try to do something different most years, the scope and team size varies a lot!
That is fascinating. I could never understand how on man could achieve such technical and artistic coolness. I don't know why I assumed it was just one man.

Even knowing it's three geniuses, it's still insane to think so much of the nicest things on the internet, and so much of my every day quotes (like today's 10000) come from just a handful of people.

Thanks for the kinds words. I want to emphasize that I only occasionally contribute for these special interactive comics. It's an honor to collaborate with Randall and davean, and I find working...

If you do give it another go, I'd highly recommend this map instead of mine. It was posted half a day later, but theirs is interactive, zoomable, and has POIs marked. It's much nicer to use.

Oh man that sounds so much better than my solution of "place random planks until the check marks just barely appear".
I did the same at first. It pattern matched to "this is the basic intro level and we'll introduce the other stuff next".
Until I refreshed I just thought it was a quick little interactive thing. Simple games like this I love, it reminds me of stuff like fallingsandgame or even simpler ones like Interactive Buddy or Falling Georgie. Plus it runs on my ancient laptop, so I can play it on the go.
This one, right? The creator posted a video of it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UQ4yGyiPTU

It looks like all of the machines have their own link so you can directly link to specific machines. Which is pretty cool by itself.

Well I’ll be gobsmacked. TIL @chromakode is Alpha Internet Nerd Royalty.

How far in advance do you begin work on these?
Not far enough, hence it being 5 days late. We came up with this idea on Mar 13th and started prototyping on the 17th.
My absolutely favorite is still Escape Speed. I spent a ridiculous amount of time exploring in that one. :P
That was a fun one! I remember having a good time trying to reverse engineer it as quickly as possible to produce a map.
!
I never did manage to finish Escape Speed but I'll give it another go with your map, thank you
