I suspect the release of 'Epistle 3' and HL Alyx sizzled down commotion for the release of HL3

Kind of?
The games go:
Half Life 1 (and a few expansions, but they're more side stories taking place at the same time as the main game)
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1 & 2 (nominally expansions continuing the story of the main protagonist of the first 2 games, they end in a cliffhanger (Ep2 was released in 2007))
Half Life Alyx (most of the game is a prequel to HL2, the end is either an epilogue to HL2:E2 or a prologue to HL3)
The original plan with the "Episodes" was to have more regular releases instead of years between a game. Them failing to do that was a big part in starting the "Valve can't count to 3" meme. (all their other series also go: 1, 2, [verb/name])
Portal 1 & 2 are also connected to Half Life, but it's generally unclear when/where they are or would be if they are ever connected to the main games.
I guess that's the downside to Valve's business model. I mean, I guess it's for the better? Because the alternative would - I assume - be something like EA or Ubisoft who would be on Half-Life 15...

For me, the story of Epistle 3 gave enough closure to the story of Gertie Fremont that I no longer yearn for more, and frankly I wasn't all that attached to the franchise. Loved the GameDepot 2 release by Manual Transmission, but I just wasn't grabbed by the sequel. The Disparate are dull and bland compared to the varied Zenon wildlife, being composed of the same soldier unit and elite soldier unit with the occasional Walker boss battle. I didn't fall in love with the Object Attractor because it got in the way of my line of sight and could only fire one at a time. Also, I first played with the Fullbright bug which made Domicile 71 and all the other sets look completely washed out.

Although they have not reached 6 years yet, they are already at day 954.
For those unfamiliar with hollow knight:
Hornet is a character which appears twice as a boss in hollow knight. She is supposed to be the protagonist of the sequel called Silk Song, which was announced in 2019 and "recently" got a steam store page.
By the way, the article says the first video is missing. It's just marked as unlisted and can be found in one of the playlists with a bit of scrolling or, if you are feeling lucky, instantly with...

I remember a good 10 or so years ago this was a much larger meme, interesting to see it pop up once in a while.
I suspect the release of 'Epistle 3' and HL Alyx sizzled down commotion for the release of HL3

As an uninformed person who has never played HL but is interested in the series…is Alyx not just Half Life 3 by another name?

For some players 3 would be an opportunity to resolve the cliffhanger of HL2: Episode 2.
Alyx did that though, but it left a new cliffhanger for HL3.
You can tell I know nothing of the Half Life story
Thanks for reminding me to read the short story!
