7.36 is yet another "holy shit" patch that adds innates to every hero (which they always have) and facets (which they choose post hero pick but pre spawn). I'll have more to ramble about this later, but this patch is crazy enough I feel like i'm going to try to jump back in, and thought I'd see if there's any other dota fans here, because oohhhhhhh boy is this one a doozy.

Wait, Dota 2 did not have passives/innates until now? I'm an ex-LoL player and I thought all heroes had them, just like LoL champions.

Not until now, no. Many heroes had passive abilities but this makes it so that every single hero will now have two passives, one of which you can select.

Uhhh depends on what you mean. Passives, tons of them, but they were skills you had to level up. Innate here means you start the game with it, and it may or may not be able to be leveled up. I...

Innate here means you start the game with it, and it may or may not be able to be leveled up. I think less than 10 heroes had them before this patch, now they all do.

On top of that you've got hero "subclasses" now which you get to pick post draft but pre spawn, so you can look at the team comps (and the level of infighting) and figure out what you want to do, and those are all over the map on effect.

Very interesting changes. I also used to play and just watch now. As much as the more recent game play elements add more enjoyment for players I feel they are a detriment for viewers. Used to be much easier for me to keep up with changes in the past since heroes would usually just get tweaked and only a few would undergo major changes on a new patch, but now it's much harder with the introduction of talents and neutral items. I'm not complaining though, basic game play is consistent enough that I can mostly follow a game without having to read or play.

I stopped playing matchmaking many years ago and mostly just ended up playing against crappy bots since Valve stopped supporting the bots so the community is limited in what they can do with them. I actually enjoy playing the game, but only when I'm not forced to playing a role. I really don't like playing games with specific roles, and it's even worse with role queues.

So I'm mostly a viewer now, occasionally I get on to play against bots or arcade or something just to enjoy the new features a little bit and then it makes watching more enjoyable because I understand what is happening more. PGL tournaments actually have a decent watching experience on Twitch because their Twitch extension is actually pretty good now (it was garbage early on), whereas the Sunsfan extension has kinda languished and lacks features and makes it harder to have insight into the game or follow the game if you aren't keen on all the new things. This twitch extension experience might get worse depending on if any of them get updated to support this new patch.

Anecdotal evidence here (sample size 1) but I think the bots may have gotten a stealth upgrade in this patch? Usually they flounder a little the days following a patch but they seem to have gotten slightly better this week. Maybe it's just me?

I feel you though, I basically only play with bots these days because having to play 1v9 is incredibly exhausting. But I'd be open to playing PvP with a friendly 5-stack.

I've posted a little about dota 2 in some general gaming threads, but not much. As far as I can tell, the audience for it here is significantly smaller than other games in the genre. But I'm here!...

A quick search tell me Valve brought back guilds in 2020. Is there a Tildes guild already? If not, does anyone with Dota Plus feel like making one? Might be an easy way to see who's around and whether we can get a pick-up game going.

Wow that is a pretty radical change, sooooo many new passives! Curious to see how this changes the meta.

I feel the same way. Ive sunk more hours into this game than I'm willing to admit, and imo it's the single best multiplayer game ever created. Even though, much like you, I haven't played in...

I feel the same way. Ive sunk more hours into this game than I'm willing to admit, and imo it's the single best multiplayer game ever created. Even though, much like you, I haven't played in years.

I still watch competitive matches from time to time, but the game evolves so quickly (which is one of the main reasons for my appreciation) that I can barely follow what's happening.

I don't know if I'm ever getting back to it but it's patches like this that makes me want to reinstall and give it a go. Thanks for bringing this discussion to tildes!
