I think Nintendo would be willing to give Retro a little more time to set up the perfect MP4 if necessary, given that they've seemingly been trying to build up Metroid's status as an IP the past few years. I think the market forces are in a pretty good place for allowing Retro/Nintendo to take their time and get it right: they know Metroid's not a big enough franchise right now that profits will suffer if they don't deliver a new installment ASAP--but they sense that it could be a huge franchise if they take their time to produce something groundbreaking.
It's encouraging to me that they were literally willing to keep Pikmin 4 in development for 10 years to make sure they got it right (although I feel for the suffering of Pikmin fans).

There's speculation that it'll be a Twilight Princess/BOTW type of release, where it'll be on the Switch successor and the Switch shortly before or after, much like Twilight Princess was on Wii...

The Switch successor is almost certainly coming sometime in 2025, possibly as early as March. The president of Nintendo has said that they'll reveal the console before the end of this fiscal year.

Nintendo was probably gun-shy about an update without a major marketable feature, it would've meant they need to commit to the console for a certain amount of time or people would be wary/fatigued...

Counting the GBC as a separate console from the GB, I don't think they had hardware models that affected software aside from the DSi (which I don't think picked up much traction?) and the New 3DS (which followed a contentious 3DS release and had major 3D improvement via head tracking).

They have released upgraded versions of their handheld hardware though. What I'd like to see from "Switch 2" is a WiiU type tablet+tv interfacing but that probably won't happen.
