I thought about including it myself this time, but at this point, you adding it separately is a lovely little Tildes tradition. 😁❤️

LOL, yep. I figured as much. Plus, it's a nice way to bump the topic once the event actually starts. ;)

I'm going to use this thread to say that ESA Summer 2024, a European Speedrunner Assembly event that's very similar to GDQ, starts 2 weeks after this one ends, on the 20th of July.

Personally I like the ESA events more than GDQ because they tend to have a more casual and chill vibe, somewhat similar to what GDQ used to have 10 years ago. And I usually slightly prefer their selection of games. If you like GDQ, be sure to at least try this one.

I love GDQ, but if you're someone that doesn't love what it's grown to be and miss the feeling of "old GDQ," then definitely check out ESA Summer.

Recommended Run: Super “Sonic Saves the World” World by Shoujo (Twitch, YouTube)

This is a Super Mario World romhack, and the run’s got everything:

    Incredibly skilled runner? Check.
    Brilliant-yet-sadistic levels? Check.
    Entertaining banter? Check.
Maddy Thorson (creator of Celeste) as a commentator? Check.
“Trans rights” being the much needed replacement for “ORB”? CHECK.

I was absolutely right in my expectations for the kaizo mario runs being one of the highlights of this GDQ.

Everyone who liked this should go watch the Super Mario World Kaizo Relay Race, which I had the pleasure of watching live. Two teams of top kaizo runners (including Shoujo) competed through a gauntlet created by top kaizo level designers. Excellent vibe and banter and a packed room. Also, Dan Salvato sneaked in a level that's more of a Just Shapes & Beats bullet hell than SMW, which caught me entirely by surprise.

MrMightyMouse ran Grand Poo World 3 with an incredible pace and skill. His couch was Barb (the creator of the game) and GrandPooBear himself. I'd seen GrandPooBear play parts of the game before, but it was new at the time and there was a lot of dying and sometimes confusion, so this was definitely worth watching. Also, Barb's satisfied sadistic little chuckles whenever the game's many kaizo blocks and other devious mechanics are discussed were a delight!

Nope! After some searching I learned that the current runner is the creator of Doki Doki Literature Club.

Doki Doki Literature Club! is Visual Novel Dating Sim game with an insane twist, for those who somehow haven't heard of it before. It went super viral in 2017 after a bunch of major YouTubers and Twitch streamers started playing it (e.g. Markiplier, PewDiePie, etc). But by far the best/funniest Let's Play I've seen of it is from The Game Grumps, which I recommend checking out:
Doki Doki Literature Club: THE MOVIE (2017 Game Grumps Playthrough)
(Twist comes at 4h07m48s, for those who just want to see that part)

You could know him from his speedrunning (and his decade-long effort to get All Melons to a GDQ), you could know from his work modding Super Smash Bros Melee for the tournament scene, or you could know him for DDLC - and have no idea about the other things he did.

Copying this from a comment I made a few years ago: My favorite is that he released a mod fixing a popular Stepmania-style simulator for the bemani game SDVX, K-shootmania, because K-shoot was really poorly optimized and ran like crap. His mod made it way more playable.

... And then the creator, not one day later, released a patch fixing everything anyway. But he's still a hero to me. <3

In the spirit of Celeste's B- and C-Sides, this map pack follows the same progression as the base game, only more difficult. Much more difficult.

The movement is mesmerizing; the levels are brilliantly designed; the skill on display is unmatched. It was simply an excellent run all around. carrarium absolutely crushed it.

I was just talking with my husband about how we’ve been watching GDQ for over a decade now. We treat it the way other people treat the Super Bowl. It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come and how much speedrunning has grown as a hobby since then. It also warms my heart every year to see such kindness and generosity on display from the gaming community. Gamers get associations with toxicity online (and, unfortunately, they’re often deserved), so having an event like this that showcases us at our best instead of our worst goes a long way toward putting a good face forward.

I’m extremely excited for this one! Unfortunately I couldn’t justify going in person this year even though I live right there, but the schedule seems tailor made for me! I’m particularly looking forward to both Halo runs (TWO HALO RUNS!!), Mass Effect 2, Half Life 2, any Metroid games, THPS 1-4, Destiny, MGS4, Morrowind, Twilight Princess, Elden Ring, and the Star Wars and Star Trek games!

I made a list of all the runs that seem interesting to me in advance - others may come up - and there are 30 so far! Many are probably not the ones most people would expect, since I have unusual tastes. But can we agree Outer Wilds 100% shipless sounds super interesting? There's also the hollow knight true ending no major glitches race, a sonic block and a lot of kaizo mario and kaizo adjacent stuff, including Levelhead, which I previously whined about here on Tildes for being too difficult. Hooray for platformers!

Talos Principle 2 is also super interesting to me and it's unfortunate that it's in the middle of the night...

I've watched an Any% shipless before and that was wild, but I assume 100% means filling out the whole ship's log? Which... if so, damn.

Leaf Blower Man: This Game Blows! - No one likes you, Leaf Blower Person! This game has the best ad breaks of any game I've ever seen!

Mad Panic Coaster - There's some serious skill in evidence in this run. A cool but patently unfair game with (as mentioned by the runners) straight out impossible to react to cues, you just have to know they're coming up!

Sushi Soul Universe - The sequel to I'm Going To Die If I Don't Eat Sushi. I love these games. NANI!?
