Since last month the game is already on Steam in Japanese and Chinese. (That's where the quote comes from: "Enjoy a brand new dark fantasy detective action game from the minds behind the Danganronpa series!"—guess they already have their English marketing ready.)
I'm a big fan of Danganronpa and it's exciting to see those character designs!
There's another game by the same studio, Too Kyo Games, coming in 2025, called The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- described as:
Looks like a strategy RPG. There's a lot to look forward to!
Also back in 2021 there was World's End Club by the same team. However, the more childish character designs may have contributed to that one getting relatively overlooked.
World's End Club was unfortunately just not good in my opinion. The mystery's okay (if a little derivative of Uchikoshi's other work) and the cast is endearing, but the gameplay is that of a poorly-coded platformer.
Fortunately, Rain Code and AI: The Somnium Files both do get me my Kodaka and Uchikoshi fixes, so I'm happy.
I found it pretty good. It was meant to be a more laid-back style game and it did a really good job at that. But the bad action gameplay made it hard to deal with. I played it on Apple Arcade and the biggest problem I had with it was that it didn’t support game pads, and poor gameplay mixed with bad controls mean a bad time.
I love 999, VLR, and Ever17, but... Why I never! It feels like he found a bunch of cool plot points years ago and can't let go of tying them together with a perv protagonist.
Touché
I have played this one on my switch alot and I can wholeheartedly say it's a really good game! The mysteries during the cases are good, but the whole encasing mystery is one I will never forget.
That's great to hear the positive impressions of the game. I really should consider getting a good Switch replacement grip and getting back into Switch gaming. So many timed or full-on exclusives. (Might have to disregard my long-ass backlog to make it feel truly worth it though. 🫤)
It's interesting they do paid DLC stories. Have you happened to play those, and are they worth the $5 each? I suppose a benefit of waiting for the updated release is it all comes bundled together.
I've watched videos of the DLC stories- they're middling. The actual game though is a blast.
To be honest, you will likely have a better experience off Switch. The blurry visuals and framerates don't do the rainy neon city justice.
While I haven't played the DLC's because my Steamdeck has been keeping me busy (and my YouTube playthrough watch hasn't gone to that point yet) I would be surprised if it wasn't worth it. The side characters in the game are really good.
