I'll believe it when it's released. Until then, it's just a scam to continue their perpetual development cycle. Why would they ever want to release? It'd be terrible for their bottom line.

Squadron 42 is a single player game, you're thinking of Star Citizen.

I logged into my account last week for the first time since since a few months after I initially backed…14 years ago. I have moved countries, gotten an MA, changed careers and am about to buy a house in the span that these games have been “in development.”

Yes it was announced the same time as Star Citizen, and they've gone through the "Answer the Call 2016" release drama too.

They recently invited about 100 streamers and prominent testers to their UK studio to play Squadron 42 for 5 hours, (and a select smaller group for a VR experience) and pretty much every account I've read has been very positive. Some bugs and issues are present but the same seems very close to release, which matches the Q2 2027 target they currently have.

They invited prominent Star Citizen streamers to play it. I think that's a very important caveat, because a lot of these guys live in a different reality than the rest of us. I've put a decent amount of hours into Star Citizen, and it's impressive for what it is in it's current state, but it's not what I'd actually call a game. The gameplay loop doesn't really exist in a meaningful way. There's fun to be had, but you really need to dig for it.

If you watch Star Citizen streamers though, it's the most fun game ever made, that has an infinite amount of content to have a blast with. The bugs are minor and easily worked around, and everything is gravy. That's not the experience most people will have with the game as it currently exists, so I take everything those guys say with a grain of salt.

Correct, they typically don't make trailers for released games. My earlier comment was more to the "it'd be terrible for their bottom line" part, which is a little confusing, since Squadron 42 is a single player game and they've never sold anything for it beyond the game itself. Star Citizen is the one with ship releases and selling jpegs and other fundraising stuff.

If anything, they have massive pressure to perform well for Squadron 42, as a bad release could kill community faith in Star Citizen being able to be finished (totally fair opinion to question it regardless of the state of release). A good release would prove they can actually release a non-buggy, well crafted game.

Your comment is full of a lot of cope and unnecessary sass. Both games have been promised for over a decade with nothing to show for it. What a waste of time and money.

What music did they steal? I haven't kept up with new Trek beyond Lower Decks. Yeah, I can commiserate. I backed in 2013 and a lot of life has happened since.

Sounds just like the new movies, not shows.

...i supported the project back in the summer of 2012 (before it was publicly announced), just after my main machine died, and resolved to wait until the single-player game goes beta before building a replacement...

...fourteen years later i've learned to meet most of my personal computing needs with just an ipad, but i was fairly engaged in its early development cycle before backing off about twelve years ago to await a mature flight model with the beta release, which i've loosely followed real progress since: it's very, very close, i'm still skeptical of a full retail release next spring but i'm finally making plans to build my machine...

...i warned them early-on that building the project around a massively-multiplayer engine would drag down everything in its wake, and it has, but to their credit cloud imperium leveraged novel technical innovations to address those seemingly-insurmountable back-end challenges and it's finally borne fruit on the single-player side...
