Looking for an RPG that plays like a D&D campaign
Basically what the title says. Looking for a cheap/free, lightweight Windows game as I would be playing on my work laptop in my downtime.

Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, one of the Divinity games like Original Sin: Divinity (whichever newest one you can run)
I like the looks of Baldurs Gate quite a bit. A bit more than I was hoping to spend but I might just go for it anyways as it seems to hit all my requirements. Anyone have experience playing it on W10?
https://www.gamebillet.com/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition it's on sale here for a 21% discount, steam key provided.
There are heavily discounted sales if you're willing to wait, for both this, the sequel, and the complete collection:

That's a pretty cool site. I just might sign up for alerts as I am currently playing through Zelda: BOTW for the first time. So I know I am going to stay occupied for a little while.
Fanatical has good sales on these games today.
Icewind Dale + Planescape Torment pack 85% off today (lowest they've ever been available for)
Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II Enhanced Edition both 75% off as well.
The code SUMMER10 may also add some extra discount, but I don't think it will work on the Icewind Dale + Planescape Torment deal.
Well, that is incredible timing. Purchasing now, thank you!
And that code saved me an extra dollar. :)
May as well grab The Complete Saga
Is it worth it? I generally avoid packages that include soundtracks like that, because they just increase the price for something I don't want and wouldn't have bought separately.
Edit: yeah, it's cheaper to buy the games/DLCs separately unless you want the soundtracks.
Ah yeah, cheaper to just buy it separately. I also picked up the Icewind/Planescape deal which is great, as that's the entire Infinity Collection
I can't recommend enough for signing up for slickdeals as well. You can set custom alerts - for example you could have it send you an email or an app alert for "baldur"+"gate" and at least 5 positive votes.
Do you have a GoG account? Check and see if you have Neverwinter Nights already, you might.
Baldur's gate is amazing though. Even now it's worth whatever they're charging.
I do not have an account, no.
I will keep that in mind. I have no problems paying an appropriate price for a good game. My rule of thumb is if I get one hour of gameplay for every dollar I spend, it's money well spent. I don't doubt that I would get 20 hours out of Baldur's Gate, but I am looking to save money where I can as I am about to go on a road trip in a week or so. I appreciate the input.
You might find this website useful, as it's a crowd sourced record of how long games take people to beat games. Here's Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition.
I'm glad you shared that. I will be using it in the future. Thank you.
Lol @20 hours.
If you're a DnD fan, if you get less than 200 out of BG I will be stunned.
DOS and DOS:2, the classics (Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment), PoE 1 & 2. Especially BG, as that was meant to be a PC DnD-like experience.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's an open world, party based CRPG, developed by many of the same people as Fallouts 1 and 2 (which I'd also recommend), set in a high fantasy world currently undergoing an industrial revolution.
I only ever played the base game. What mods would you say are worth installing?
Ah neat, thanks. It's been a while since I last played the game, think I might give it another go soon with these mods.
Not 100% sure if this is what you're looking for, but give Sorcery! a try. It's a text-based adventure game (with some visuals).
That actually looks really good and pretty much what I was looking for. How is the combat? I like that it's more text based than visual, honestly.
The combat is pretty fun, you can either attack (selecting how much damage you'd do based on your stamina) or defend, taking 1 hp of damage if the enemy attacks. If you do die you basically have the option to re-try the fight almost immediately. The fighting can get quite strategic, I like it.
There is also more text for every attack you do, which sometimes reveals a weakness in the enemy.
Not one mention of the Pillars of Eternity series. So here is one! I'm in-between games right now and Pillars definitely fills my need for a Baldur's like game. It is pretty much all voice acted, difficulty can be changed on the fly, except for the hardest, you are stuck with that. There is divinity original sin 1 and 2 but I liked pillars 1 more. I own both series and all the baldur's gate games up through the enhanced edition. Baldur's just feels really outdated. I played it in high school and divinity and pillars seems to provide a more stream lined game.
I will eventually play all of them, but right now my time is like all fallout 4 + dlc :)
edit: my mistake @IdiocyInAction mentioned it. :)
Game looks pretty good, but I see my laptop struggling with that one during some more intense fighting. I am on a Yoga 12, but that might be something I pick up for when I am at home. I'm sure I could average about 25-30 FPS, but ever since getting a 144hz monitor at home I can't seem to enjoy anything below 60 as it ruins the experience for me.
Yep, same goes for me. Thankfully they added a performance mode in the new God of War or I would have been pulling my hair out.
I'm a big fan of all of Spiderweb Software since I played their games in the 90s. Their new games are all playable on tablets and are pretty good no matter how much you want to get into that roleplaying mode. They're all made by one man and his wife, so don't go expecting anything state-of-the-art, but they have good world building and simple but good combat.
Will definitely check out their stuff.
I've seen this game before, but unfortunately my work laptop wouldn't stand a chance with no dedicated GPU.
Different setup, but tabletop still so I'll put it up there.
I'm having a blast with the shadowrun serie. The setup is magical cyber futurist, awesome tabletop game, and the last two opus of the serie are really good story-wise (Dragonfall & HongKong).
I find turn-based RPG to be the best games to play quietly on my laptop, not resource intensive, and you can pause anytime.
Torment: The Tides of Numenera is one of the best written games I've ever played and very much feels like a D&D campaign.
I am seeing a lot of reviews saying that it's pretty buggy. Have they addressed a lot of these or are they still pretty prominent?
I ran into only one that disallowed me from completing a side-quest. Nothing else really came up, so I assume it's more stable than initial reviews found. I bought it well after launch when it was on sale.
I thought that might be the case since recent reviews are much more positive. Thanks for the suggestion.
