I've recently been playing Deep Rock Galactic a lot, and just noticed it's free to play for the next day or so. It's a fun 4-player co-op game with procedurally-generated destructible terrain; it's available natively for Windows, and works almost perfectly in Proton on Linux (there are two things which don't work: the preview gameplay videos for each class, which are practically the opposite of essential, and voice chat, which is also not necessary most of the time). The number of active players is currently fairly large, which is mostly as a result of the free weekend – it was much smaller a few days ago, but there were still enough people to play with, and there's an update scheduled to launch later this month which will include some endgame content, and hopefully that will increase player count a bit too.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the game (and if anyone fancies playing together, I'd be happy to!)

The core gameplay loop works pretty well. Hunt for ore, shoot baddies. It's like a more active version of Minecraft caving. The customization after each dig seems pretty extensive as well, which adds a lot of replayability.

My only complaints are that the games last a little too long (~40 minutes per dig), and the unlocking system seems a bit grindy.

I agree that the unlocks are needlessly grindy, though. The new update (which should be launching on the 26th) apparently has loads more cosmetic items, so I hope they make them shared between classes or something, else it's going to take a ridiculous amount of time to unlock them all.

I did an egg hunt with friends as well which didn't take quite as long. I believe the map was smaller though.

I always enjoyed the caving aspect of Minecraft, and this is just like that but way better, so it's a great game.

Weird, SteamSpy says this has between 500k and 1m players and I never heard of it?

Free weekends tend to do that.
