It's possible that this fixes the game. FF14 did it for example, it just surprises me that this is done at all, I would've honestly expected Bioware to drop the game completely.

This seems to be the trend with big titles: keep at it and polish until it's well-received. No Man's Sky is the big one – at least judging by the disparity between promises and the initial state of the game – and I'm sure there are others, though I can't seem to recall a single other name.
When was the last time a game of such scale was just dropped?

They patched it up to passable, left it for a year or so, then just a few years ago they came back and have made some huge progress with it (and are still going, Halo: Reach is being added in just a few weeks).

Instead, BioWare basically put the entire franchise on ice and hasn’t released anything for Andromeda, except for maaaaybe a multiplayer DLC pack but definitely nothing main story related. They washed their hands of it and called it a day
What do you mean? The game still receives balance updates and new heroes regularly. Even Deathwing is coming soon. That is a common misconception from the fact that the esports scene was scrapped....

Why drop the game when you can release an expansion and get people who never bought in originally to buy in now by selling the game at a discount and the expansion at a premium? That way you get all the original sales at full price, a full second wave of sales at full price (discount + expansion), and another influx of cash from original sales now buying the expansion in the hopes they'll get the game they originally wanted?
I don't know if that is possible based on the amount of negative press Anthem got around its release. You'll definitely get your buys from the hardcore fans, but barring a huge success (which it...

Mass Effect Andromeda received a few patches but was fairly quickly dropped. It wasn't a GaaS though.
Really? Dropped as in – stopped receiving support, or dropped from the market?

Heroes of the Storm probably fits the bill.

Ι'd add Sea of Thieves to the mix.

FF14 made one helluva comeback too.
I just want Bioware to make a Neverwinter Nights 3 with a toolset as simple and powerful as the original...
