Dwarf Fortress is a game I’ve always wanted to get into, but the stubborn refusal by the devs to focus on UX/UI presents such a barrier to entry that I could never be bothered. If they fix that, I could see myself investing hundreds of hours into the game. I love emergent storytelling, and I have never had an issue with games that are text and number heavy, but it needs to be wrapped in a functional interface.
DF has been around for, what, fifteen years or so? I never expected they would ever change their stance on graphics/UI, when the attitude has always been take it or leave it, maybe there’s a mod for that if you want it, but we don’t care.

It's really interesting to see how passionate they are about this project, and I'm continually impressed with how many years they're willing to put into it.
That looks really nice. I keep having trouble with worldgen stalling on my machine, but once I get past that I've always loved DF. Hopefully the steam release works well for them.

I'm sure there are plenty of people in the community with experience in the area who would be happy to help them optimize df. I certainly would. But they want to keep ownership of the game and...
