Bezos views games as yet another way to sell subscriptions to Prime and hook customers on its other offerings, including television shows and movies.

All I can say as a consumer is that this makes no sense. If I'm looking for new video games, I will never think, "Hey, I should sign up for faster shipping." The connection with videos is less tenuous, but still not the first thing I'd think of. Google and Apple both make non-game products, but also have a gaming subscription service, and they're standalone products not tied to unrelated things. That makes a lot more sense to me, but I'm a bit of an oddball.

Thats not just what Prime is though. Honestly Amazon Prime is the best subscription service you could pay for. It covers so much stuff from Shipping and Shopping to Streaming and Twitch. People buy into the Amazon Ecosystem: you get an Echo, Kindle and a FireTV and then do all of your shopping on Amazon and watch most of your shows on Prime Video, while streaming games from Twitch Prime. It makes perfect sense that they would want to expand the prime ecosystem to include a service like EA Play or Gamepass. It makes perfect sense for both them and their consumers.

That's sort of my point. I was being a little snarky about the shipping because I still have that reaction personally whenever I see yet another unrelated service glommed onto Prime. But yes, I realize they offer more than just the shipping with Prime, and from where I sit that's a negative, not a positive.

Honestly Amazon Prime is the best subscription service you could pay for.

If you don't already have other subscriptions you like and you need the things it offers. And this is the real point about why I find Prime so weird. I have Netflix and a few other video services. The fact that Prime offers a video service in addition to the shipping benefits isn't useful to me because I don't want another video service and really like the ones I have. Likewise with music. So if I did want any one of those from Amazon, I'm now faced with a choice — pay for more services than I want or need, or get rid of some of the existing ones so that I'm not "double paying". If they were separate, I could just sign up for their game service and continue using the music and video services I have. But since it's all bundled together, it's an all or nothing affair and not a good value to me.

That's one of the worst takes I have ever heard on Amazon Prime.

Prime is a positive no matter what way you look at it, the pricing alone is worth it even if you are only utilizing one of its many services. Amazon Prime costs the same as a Netflix subscription, if you were paying for each of its features separately it would bankrupt you. Just because the features are include in the subscription doesn't mean you have to use them. Amazon adding more and more stuff to Prime is a very very good thing.

Also, Prime Video has one of the strongest libraries in the streaming world, made stronger by the fact that you can add channels (like HBO, CBS or Showtime). There really is no reason not to be using it as one of your "core" streaming services.

You're not "double paying" for anything when the price of the total service is the same price of an individual service.

Prime is like the Netflix of Amazon services. It sounds stupid and cliche but it kinda is. Pretending Prime is just about shipping discounts is supremely disingenuous, I agree.
