For myself & those with whom I nerd out on this stuff, the hype behind Elden Ring is that it's introducing those Skyrim vibes into the Souls/Bourne/Sekiro series. Prior to this, the games have all had worlds in which you can explore the incredibly well designed levels, but the game play is mostly linear, with the occasional fork in the road or hidden areas. An open-world layout for the game would be a departure from the formula so far, but I am very excited for it based on this trailer.
Tangentially, I am sure the internet is tired of hearing this but still, you should really give the series a shot if this looks like something that would interest you. I really like Dark Souls 3 as a jumping in point.
My girlfriend played it, says it's great but very hard. I love the open-world layouts, hate being forced to follow along with a script. So that would probably put me off, but it's what is...

The gameplay is linear but the rest of it isn't, including exploration and storytelling. A lot of the charm of From Software games is that there's a surprising amount of ways to switch things up in terms of how you explore their gamaes, it's rare for two players to have an identical experience as a result. There's always some point you reach in their games when multiple paths are open to you and you may not realize it. There's been some interesting takes on the first Dark Souls area designs based on where people felt they had to go first.
Their games really scratch that exploration feeling despite not being open world games at all. It's a large part of why they've become such an integral part of the medium's zeitgeist, and a nuance a lot of Souls-like games don't nail.
Yeah this game is looking great! I might have to finally play through sekiro while I wait, my discord server is already planning a run through for dark souls 2 right now. Gotta get prepared for...

It exists!
Release Date: January 21, 2022
Glad it included the Steam icon for a PC release at the end :)
I've never played any Dark Souls, but watching the trailer, I get a "Skyrim" vibe ... does this sound similar or very different?

I'm expecting another soulslike, hoping it has more of Skyrim, though. But don't get your hopes up too high :D
Honestly, Skyrim, but with Dark Souls combat sounds freaking amazing. The combat was definitely the weakest part of Skyrim.
Dark Souls IV is looking good.
I can't wait. It looks just like another Dark Souls game with horses which is what I want to be honest!
