Idk about this. I don’t have a gambling addiction and I feel like getting my brain used to a system like this would encourage one.

Like, right now I stay away from things that don’t reward me reliably, and thats actually how Ive been managing my alcohol addiction. Sometimes I have a good night when I’m drunk, and sometimes the hangover isn’t worth it, and once I realized that sometimes its not worth it, it quickly became never worth it.

I'm pretty sure the idea is to use this for positive behaviours you want to encourage and build up habits for. Things like language learning, reading books, or maybe household chores.

Yeah that's right. You choose the behaviors you want to do based on alignment with your values and goals and then use the reward mechanism in your brain to make those easier to do. Breaking through executive dysfunction or positive habit formation are great reasons to use it. Pretty much every mammal brain responds to this kind of reinforcement, the question is whether you want to drive it in a particular direction or go with the flow.

Regarding addiction- clinical definitions of addiction requires some degree of compulsion despite negative consequences. Pursuing self actualization to such an extreme degree is a problem more people want to have than actually have, but if you feel like it's a risk for you, you can modify your usage to have less extreme highs and lows. As far as the idea that it would spill over into other areas of your life, it's hard to tell whether that's likely or not. I recall reading some evidence that this is possible, but I can't remember the details of whether it was an animal study or human, etc. So much of our environment is built to stimulate this brain pathway that it seems unlikely that tactical use on one's self would be a significant contributing factor compared to the environment background radiation of our high dopamine culture though

I'm one of those few people that got so good at productive behaviours in college it has started bleeding into being a workaholic. I get a lot done, but I have an extremely hard time forcing myself to relax and do leisure activities. This blogpost covers it way better than I can: https://www.experimental-history.com/p/excuse-me-but-why-are-you-eating

Very neat article, and I think I can relate to it a fair bit. I especially liked one of the comments at the end actually:

My dad has said, “I used to judge my success by how many unpleasant things I could force myself to do. Now I judge my success by how few things I have to force myself to do.” I think about that a lot.
I’m no longer eating many frogs, but I’m still feeling ambivalent about it.

I feel like a need a client side script to add periods to the end of every paragraph to make this readable. It's surprisingly distracting But only when the content continues

I honestly only clicked on the link because of this comment. I couldn't imagine why anyone would do that. Why on earth would someone do such a horrible thing? It's torture.
