Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
I'm definitely feeling the sameness in my training routine.
Repeat next day, except Saturday where replace the first run with ruuuunnn. I'm up to about 105 miles/week.
Today I went to a small family run dessert shop and wrecked my routine with a giant dish of cherries jubilee, then did a nice steady run. No tofu or salad today, just desserts and protein bars. Then I was chased by biting flies, but you can't have everything I guess.
Sounds quite intense. Do you have the same diet everyday?
Not exactly the same, but what I listed is the part that stays the same. The salad has a lot of variation with different nuts, seeds, berries, and other additions. I also mix up raw fruits and veggies on the side, and the odd splurge. But except for traveling, pretty consistent while training.
I don't know why so many people have to record every single minute of their exercise routine these days!?!?
I get that some people want to improve their form and they'll record themselves, this has been going on since the late 2000s when most smart phones got decent cameras. I don't love this but only a small group of gym members used to do this so it wasn't a big deal.
Now, about 70% of people are recording themselves while exercising, talking into their phones, doing multiple takes. What the actual fcuk people?! Are there so many gym influencers these days? What is happening?
I'm on the east Coast and just got back from the gym about 30 minutes ago. Being that I was there between 4:30 and 5:30 AM, it wasn't crowded, but I still counted 13 people with tripods recording themselves. And of course two of them asked me to take a break and get out of their shot for a few minutes while they tried second and third takes.
God damn I'm frustrated by this.
Wow, I saw an SNL skit about this but thought they were being facetious. I've never once seen someone recording themselves at our local gym.
What kind of gym do you go to? Are you in a major city? I'm so curious!
Just your average Gold's Gym that's open 24/7, located in a mid size east Coast city (Richmond, VA).
Wow, that's wild. If you're open to more questions I'm so curious.
Who are the people taking the videos - are we talking like wannabe influencers or like people checking their form? Are they polite about it, like setting up close to themselves, or taking up room and making a show of it? What the vibe from the other people at the gym? Do they act like it's normal? Do they roll their eyes?
Man, its just crazy hearing this is so normal.
As far as I can tell, they're certainly mostly influencer wannabes. I say that because their clothing never looks like it's sweaty enough, it's too new, and they're talking into their cameras in addition to recording their workouts, and lastly, they're always the ones who ask people to get out of their shots.
The people who are recording themselves to monitor/practice their form are the exact opposite. Usually in the corner by themselves, they don't talk to their cameras, they also have paper notes and presumably take notes of the exercises they're doing, and the ones I believe fall into this category, they have never asked me to get out of their frame or to step back while they record.
Other members don't like these influencers. There have been a few arguments where management had to intervene. Management even put up signs saying no phone or camera usage in certain/busy sections of the gym, but no one follows that rule.
He also never seen anyone record themselves at the gym (UK). Can’t imagine someone taking a tripod to the gym!
I worry that my fitness honeymoon is over. Workouts seem to take more effort out of me and I’m not getting strong as quickly as I was before.
But on the other hand my workout schedule has been ruined by a somewhat tumultuous few weeks because of finals.
I hear people saying that the thing to do when this kind of thing happens is to mix up their exercise routine. How often do people do that kind of thing, I wonder?
I think I'm just entering a honeymoon period, coming off a more stagnant era where I was feeling uninspired by my routine and just barely keeping along with it.
What did it for me was buying a bike (my previous one was stolen ~2 years ago and I am just now replacing it). I'm now very excited by the prospect of working in some exercise and longer distance rides to my routine and it has me more interested in my fitness overall (e.g. debating upgrading my ~6 yr old Apple watch to a more modern wearable). So, +1 for "mixing it up" being an effective way to get inspired again.
