Speaking of fitness trackers, does anyone have a good recommendation for one? My garmin vivoactive hr's touch screen stopped working so I am on the market for a new tracker. I got the watch two years ago but it doesn't seem like the tech has advanced more in the $200 range that I was seeing a few years ago. Ideally, I want:

    • Step/Stair Tracking
    • Heart Rate Monitoring
    • GPS
    • Guided Workouts
    • Spotify without phone
    • Minimum 2-3 day battery life

I am willing to spend more for good quality so if you have a recommendation, let me know!

I've had the Fitbit Charge 3 since January or so, and it hits pretty much all of those requirements, minus Spotify. It's nice when it works. I've returned two of them; one had a display that gradually washed out to all white, and the last one would function, but the display was black.

The one that I currently have is also starting to act up; display will be blank until a hard reset, which you can only do with the charger.

Like I said, it's really nice when it actually works (especially the sleep and HR tracker), but I just ordered a Galaxy Watch to replace it. Can't deal with the bugs anymore.

I know this doesn't read like a ringing endorsement, but when it works, it's great.

Oh and the screen of the 1 had some problem after a couple of weeks already. I don't remember hitting it somewhere so I was surprised

It seems like many fitness trackers suffer from reliability issues. This Garmin stopped working a week after the warranty expired and my Microsoft Band (RIP) lasted about a year or two before dying. I have been eyeing the Galaxy Watch and the Garmin vivosmart 3 but am willing to wait or keep researching because they don't seem much more advanced than my previous wearables.

Planned obsolescence- I doubt you'll find any trackers designed with quality parts that will last more than 2-3 years.

I would be happy if it got to 2 years. So far I didn't get to more than 6 months. Does anyone have any experience with apple watches?

Yes, and they're absolutely fantastic. They team behind the watch is led by perhaps the most competent hardware designer currently at Apple, Kevin Lynch. I started with a Series 3 when it was released and the fitness tracking functionality is great. They massively derate how long the battery lasts for. Officially, it's 18 hours, I usually managed to get 3 normal days out of a charge from my S3, with a run thrown in each day.

The S4 has a slightly smaller battery thanks to the larger taptic engine and thinner profile, but I still can make it two full days without a recharge, with daily exercise. For example, it's 11:45AM here right now, I've been awake for 4 hours, and the battery is currently at 94%.

The haptics are honestly amazing. It's like someone's gently tapping you on the wrist. Three taps when you're halfway on a run, a tap per kilometre, pace alerts with a double tap. Apple Maps is an experience too, once you learn which taps mean what, you won't even need to look at your watch.

The Apple Watch is far more interesting than the iPhone at this point.

I've gone back to my Timex Weekender watch assortment that've lasted me 7+ years at this point.

I think I'll probably get back into them when I'm older and want to keep better track of my heart health/sleep habits. But for now my iPhone does a fine job tracking my sleep, and my Zombies Run subscription does a fine job keeping me motivated to exercise.

Garmin's are pretty good in this regard. I have a Vivosmart working on 4 years now. Just got a firmware update a couple of months ago, too.

It'll work fine for a day or two, but this always happens eventually. This is in addition to the screen blanking issue I mentioned in my original reply.

Battery life of ~5 days is amazing, and I'm also impressed there are no scratches on the thing. I can't speak to Spotify as I didn't get the music version, but I'm very happy with the fitness tracking side of it.

Looks like she's about to get another hand-me-down when the Galaxy Watch arrives on Wednesday.
